May is Celiac Awareness Month—a time to highlight celiac disease, the challenges that can come with it, and the importance of building community and support for children and families. Not all signs are easy to recognize, especially in children and teens. While some may experience stomach pain or bloating, others show less obvious symptoms like headaches, growth delays, or skin rashes.

Early diagnosis is key to helping children feel their best and preventing complications. At the Pediatric Celiac Disease Program at Mount Sinai, we partner with families through every stage of diagnosis and management. Led by Juliana Kennedy, MD, our multidisciplinary team—including a registered dietitian and licensed clinical social worker—provides expert, compassionate care to support each child’s medical, nutritional, and emotional well-being. The NICU teams at Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai West recently participated in a week-long Kangaroo Care “Hold-a-thon,” celebrating the power of skin-to-skin connection for our smallest patients.

Kangaroo Care—when caregivers hold their newborns skin-to-skin—has been shown to support bonding, improve neurodevelopment, increase milk supply, and help stabilize vital signs. Throughout the week leading up to International Kangaroo Care Day on May 15, families and care teams participated in Kangaroo Care while helping raise awareness around its many benefits. In total, caregivers practiced kangaroo care for 206 hours over the course of the week!

This event also highlighted the incredible work of our nurses, respiratory therapists, and multidisciplinary NICU teams, who support and encourage families to take part in these meaningful moments each day.

We’re proud to continue growing initiatives like this that bring together education, connection, and care—reflecting our commitment to compassionate, family-centered care and helping every child get the strongest possible start 💛🦘🎉

We recently celebrated the launch of a new culinary menu at Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital.

Created in collaboration with Morrison Healthcare, this comprehensive pediatric dining program features creative, menus built for specific age groups and interactive, memory‑making dining experiences—reimagining the role food can play in the hospital setting. From nutritious meals tailored to different developmental stages to thoughtful presentation that invites curiosity and joy, the program is designed with kids and families at the center.

We’re proud to offer an upgraded dining experience specifically designed for our pediatric community. This initiative underscores our commitment to supporting patients and families not only through exceptional clinical care, but through comfort, creativity, and connection—because every detail of the hospital experience matters.

The Mount Sinai Health System recently announced that Lisa M. Satlin, MD, the Herbert H. Lehman Professor of Pediatrics and Chair of the Jack and Lucy Clark Department of Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and Pediatrician-in-Chief of Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital, has been named the 2026 recipient of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ASPN) Founders’ Award. The honor recognizes a lifetime of outstanding contributions to pediatric nephrology through research, education, clinical care, and leadership.

The ASPN Founders’ Award is the Society’s highest honor, recognizing individuals whose careers have had a lasting impact on the field of pediatric nephrology and who exemplify excellence in scholarship, mentorship, and service to children with kidney disease. Throughout her career, Dr. Satlin has built and led programs that have strengthened pediatric research and clinical care. She has also trained and guided generations of physician-scientists, many of whom now hold leadership roles across academic medicine.

Congratulations to Dr. Satlin on this outstanding and well-deserved recognition.

Last week, the Pediatric Complex Care Program at the Cohen Center for Pediatric Comprehensive Care at Mount Sinai hosted a small group gathering for medically complex children and their families. With limited capacity, this event included a subset of our community and featured adaptive activities designed for complex care patients—including bingo and creative crafts—while also creating space for siblings and caregivers to connect, share, and build community.

At the heart of the Pediatric Complex Care Program is a commitment to supporting not only our patients, but the families who care for them, and to creating meaningful opportunities for connection within our community. We are so grateful to everyone who joined us, and to the volunteers from Project Sunshine, whose time, generosity, and support made the day so special.

This weekend at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) Meeting in Boston, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Mount Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital was proud to showcase more than 30 presentations from our physicians and researchers - highlighting the breadth and depth of pediatric research taking place across our departments.

PAS provided an important opportunity to share how our innovative research is pushing pediatric care forward—while also learning from colleagues across the field. These exchanges reinforce our commitment to discovery, collaboration, and translating new ideas into better care for children today and in the future.
