To every high school and college student like the ones that joined me in my OR today - that dreams of becoming an orthopedic surgeon:

I remember being a student and looking at the road ahead, wondering if I could really make it.

The journey to becoming an orthopedic surgeon is long. There are years of studying, difficult exams, early mornings, late nights, sacrifices, and plenty of moments of doubt.

But I can tell you from experience: it is worth it.

There is something incredibly rewarding about using your knowledge, your hands, and your skills to help someone walk again, return to sports, get back to work, or simply get back to living their life without pain.

If you’re a high school or college student thinking about a career in medicine, don’t let the length of the journey intimidate you.

You don’t have to figure out the entire path today.

Start with curiosity. Work hard. Find mentors. Stay disciplined. And keep moving forward—one step at a time.

Because one day, you may find yourself standing in the operating room, realizing that the dream you once had as a student has become your reality.

And maybe, one day, you’ll be the orthopedic surgeon inspiring the next generation.

Your quadriceps tendon is what helps you straighten your knee and walk with strength. When it ruptures, patients often describe a sudden pop, pain, swelling, and difficulty lifting the leg. The good news: with early diagnosis, surgical repair when needed, and committed rehab, most patients can get back to the activities they love.🦵🔧 PatientEducation

🏀 A sudden “pop” in the knee… and you can’t jump, straighten your leg, or continue playing? This could be a patellar tendon rupture—a serious injury we see in basketball athletes after explosive takeoffs or awkward landings.

The patellar tendon is critical for extending your knee. When it ruptures, the connection between your kneecap and shinbone is lost—making surgery necessary to restore function.

🔧 Surgical repair reconnects the tendon and reestablishes the knee’s mechanics—but that’s just the beginning.

Recovery requires:• Structured rehabilitation• Gradual return of strength and mobility• Patience and discipline

⏳ Most athletes can return to sport—but only with proper healing and guidance.

🚨 Don’t ignore:• Inability to straighten the knee• A visible change in kneecap position• Immediate swelling after injury

Early diagnosis and timely surgery make all the difference in getting you back on the court safely.

Protect your knees. Train smart. And if something feels wrong—get it checked.

Orthopedic surgeon here 👋🏽⛷️
Let’s talk real talk about skiing aggressively without an ACL—because I get this question a lot on the slopes and in the clinic. FIRST PRAYERS TO LINDSEY VONN FOR A HEALTHY RECOVERY!

Can you do it?
👉 Yes, some people can.
Should you?
👉 That depends— definitely not a flex.

What the ACL actually does

main stabilizer that prevents the tibia from sliding forward and controls rotational forces. Skiing—especially downhill, carving hard, moguls, variable snow—is basically a rotational stress gr***de.

Why skiing feels “possible” without an ACL
• Ski boots limit ankle motion, which can reduce stress on the knee
• Strong quads and hamstrings can partially compensate
• Experienced skiers sometimes adapt their technique subconsciously

So yes, some ACL-deficient skiers rip groomers and feel “fine.”

Here’s the catch (ALERT‼️)

🚨 Aggressive skiing = unpredictable forces
• Sudden edge catch
• Backseat landing
• Variable snow
• Fatigue late in the day

Without an ACL, those moments dramatically increase your risk of:
• Meniscus tears
• Cartilage damage
• Early knee arthritis
• A knee “giving way” at the worst possible time

Those injuries are often worse than the original ACL tear.

Can a brace save you?

A functional ACL brace can help, especially for straight-line skiing, but:
• It does not replace the ACL
• It does not fully protect against rotation
• Confidence ≠ protection

My surgeon take 🩺

If you’re:
• Skiing conservatively
• On predictable terrain
• Strong, well-trained, and symptom-free

👉 You might get away with it short-term.

If you’re:
• Charging hard
• Skiing bumps, trees, powder, or variable snow
• Experiencing instability or swelling

👉 You’re rolling the dice on long-term knee damage.

Bottom line

You can ski without an ACL.
You can even ski well.
But aggressive downhill skiing without an ACL is a calculated risk, not a loophole.

Your future knees will remember the choices you make today.

Stay strong. Ski smart. Protect your joints. 🦵❄️ SportsMedicine OrthopedicSurgeon

What is an ORIF of an olecranon fracture?

This is a fracture of the olecranon — the bony tip of your elbow that you lean on and that your triceps muscle attaches to. When it breaks and shifts out of place, it usually needs surgery to heal properly.

ORIF stands for Open Reduction Internal Fixation:
• Open → we make a surgical incision
• Reduction → the broken bone pieces are lined back up
• Internal fixation → we hold them with metal (plates, screws, or wires)

Early drainage after a Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA): what it means & how to manage it 🦴🩺

Why early drainage happens (first 72 hrs):
• Reactive synovial fluid after surgical trauma
• Hematoma or seroma formation
• Anticoagulation effects (DVT prophylaxis)
• Inadequate wound sealing or high soft-tissue tension
• Early excessive motion or swelling
• ⚠️ Infection (always rule out if persistent)

Why it matters:
Persistent drainage ↑ risk of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) — early recognition is key.

Initial management:
• Compressive dressings
• Temporary activity & ROM modification
• Optimize anticoagulation (hold or adjust if appropriate)
• Close daily wound monitoring

If drainage persists >5–7 days:
• Early surgical irrigation & debridement
• Polyethylene exchange if indicated
• Targeted antibiotics once cultures obtained

Bottom line:
Early, decisive management protects the implant — don’t wait on a draining wound.
