If you grew up around unpredictability, chaos, criticism, neglect, abuse or simply not knowing what version of someone you were going to get - then "understanding" became VERY useful.
"If I can understand it, maybe I can predict it. If I can predict it, maybe I can protect myself" and that survival strategy can quietly follow you into healing.
Now, you need to understand every symptom, trigger, emotion, nervous system response, thought, reaction, behaviour, pattern, relationship, defence, piece of your childhood, part of your psyche, bit of your ego, cell in your body. Every 👏 fu***ng 👏 thing 👏.
It can look like extraordinary self-awareness, but sometimes it's hypervigilance wearing a very clever disguise.
Information can be like co***ne when understanding has historically helped you feel safer. Another theory, another podcast, another expert, another explanation. And the healing industry can feed this beautifully.
Practitioners offering extraordinarily complicated frameworks alongside extraordinarily strict rules about how you're supposed to heal can feel "safe". But complexity doesn't necessarily give you certainty, sometimes it makes you even more uncertain.
Maybe you barely understand what they're saying, and maybe they understand your nervous system better than you. Maybe they can see what you're missing. Maybe you need their framework, their rules, their next course.
Complexity can look like expertise but complexity isn't automatically helpful, and being difficult to understand isn't proof that something is profound. Sometimes it's very clever smoke and mirrors. Whether intentional or not, pay attention to what someone's work leaves you with...
Do you understand and trust yourself more? Or are you increasingly scared of getting healing wrong and dependent on someone else to explain you back to yourself?
Spot the delicious irony in you learning something about yourself from THIS post 🤣 maybe you follow me because my explanations help things click. Maybe you've saved 47 of my posts for later, I do it too! Worth being mindful over, for sure.
