Acupuncture May Ease PTSD-Linked Anxiety and Depression, Study Finds
SEOUL, May 8 (Korea Bizwire) - Acupuncture may help alleviate anxiety and depression associated with post-traumatic stress disorder by acting on specific neural pathways in the brain, according to new research from South Korea.
A joint study by scientists at the Korea Institute of Oriental Medicine and Kyung Hee University found that electrical stimulation of traditional acupuncture points can activate the trigeminal nerve - a key sensory pathway — and reduce neuroinflammation linked to emotional distress.
The researchers focused on two commonly used points on the head and forehead, applying electroacupuncture in a laboratory model designed to mimic symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. The treatment led to measurable improvements in behavior, including reduced signs of anxiety and depression and increased exploratory activity.
Further analysis suggested that the therapy works by regulating a receptor associated with brain inflammation, helping to suppress inflammatory responses that are believed to contribute to mood disorders.
“This study shows that acupuncture can modulate anxiety and depression by inhibiting neuroinflammation through the trigeminal nerve pathway,” said Kim Hyung-jun, one of the lead researchers.
While the findings are based on animal models, the researchers said they plan to pursue clinical trials to evaluate whether the approach can be translated into treatments for patients. They also aim to develop safer brain-stimulation techniques based on the same mechanism.
The study adds to a growing body of research exploring how traditional medical practices might intersect with modern neuroscience, particularly in the treatment of complex mental health conditions.

Electro acupuncture focused on reducing tightness and restriction in the hip and glute.
Acupuncture includes numerous styles from meridian to orthopedic. Orthopedic acupuncture utilizes meridian acupuncture points, needling what’s called ashi’s (exactly where the patient identifies it hurts) as well as trigger points, many of which are meridian acupuncture points. Western research identified needling trigger points in what’s called dry needling, but dry needling is an over 2,000 year old style of acupuncture first described in China’s earliest medical text, the ‘Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic,’ it describes using tender or painful points, including trigger/motor points to rotate, lift and thrust needles causing muscle contractions.
Needling painful points is one of acupuncture’s earliest forms of point selection. China’s preeminent physician, Sun Si-Miao (581-682 C.E.), called these points “ashi’s,” mentioned in chapter 13 of the Ling Shu.
Western research into acupuncture shows it restores blood flow, modulates fluid physiology, innervates nerves and fascia, stimulates changes in the release of immunological modulators, neurotransmitters, hormones and is a science based medicine.

Have you ever tried acupuncture?
Acupuncture and electro acupuncture can help reduce tightness, pain, improve circulation, range of
motion and help to heal acute and chronic injuries.

Have you tried cosmetic acupuncture, also known facial rejuvenation acupuncture?
How it Works: It uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, which stimulates collagen and elastin production, while also targets muscles to improve tone.
Benefits: Known to minimize fine lines, soften deeper wrinkles, lift sagging eyelids, reduce jowls, and improve skin tone/color.
Typically done for a total of 10-14 treatments.

At the local level, acupuncture rapidly remodels the immune microenvironment by inducing controlled neurogenic inflammation, increasing blood flow, and coordinating interactions among sensory nerves, mast cells, fibroblasts, and immune mediators. Systemically, vagus nerve–dependent anti-inflammatory pathways suppress excessive inflammatory factor release, while sympathetic dynamically adjust immune cell activity depending on disease stage. The study also highlights the role of the enteric nervous system, showing how acupuncture strengthens gut barrier integrity and modulates microbiota–neuropeptide interactions to influence whole-body immunity.

The authors note that these findings reposition acupuncture within contemporary neurobiology. Rather than acting as a generalized placebo or local intervention, acupuncture functions as a form of programmable neuromodulation that influence sensory nerves and autonomic pathways. By decoding how different stimulation parameters activate specific neural circuits, acupuncture can be aligned with emerging bioelectronic medicine strategies. This mechanistic clarity, they emphasize, provides a scientific foundation for integrating acupuncture-inspired approaches into modern treatment paradigms for immune and inflammatory disorders.

Understanding acupuncture as a circuit-based neuro-immune intervention opens new translational possibilities. The findings support the development of precision acupuncture protocols and bioelectronic devices. Such approaches could offer non-pharmacological alternatives for managing chronic inflammation, autoimmune diseases, pain, and gut-related disorders. More broadly, the work bridges traditional medicine and modern systems neuroscience, demonstrating how ancient therapeutic principles can inform next-generation neuromodulation technologies. As multi-omics data and artificial intelligence are integrated into this framework, acupuncture may help shape personalized, circuit-targeted therapies that restore immune balance rather than merely suppress symptoms.
