Autistic self-sabotage can look like procrastination, avoidance, perfectionism, shutting down, or repeatedly getting in your own way.

However these patterns often begin as self-protection. Your brain learned a way to reduce overwhelm, uncertainty, rejection, failure, or exhaustion and eventually that protection started limiting the life you want.

This doesn’t make you lazy, difficult, or incapable of change. It just means there’s a pattern to understand.

My article, The Mountain Is Autism: Transforming Self-Sabotage into Self-Mastery, shows you what may be underneath the behaviors you keep blaming yourself for and how self-protection can turn into self-mastery.

And if you’re ready to go beyond understanding the pattern, the companion includes my ASCEND Method™: a step-by-step framework for building self-trust, working with your actual capacity, protecting your energy, and turning insight into sustainable action.

You can keep fighting the same patterns or learn how to climb your mountain differently

Stop procrastinating, overthinking, and getting in your own way, without blaming yourself or forcing yourself to push harder. Find the Substack link in my about section.

For Autistic adults who have been told relationship problems are caused by poor communication. I assure you that is not the whole story!

More often than not, a contributing issue is a nervous system that never feels safe enough to stop surviving.

That’s why you can love someone deeply and still pull away from touch. Still feel guilty saying no, agree to intimacy when you’re exhausted, & wonder why closeness sometimes feels comforting and other times feels overwhelming.

It’s easy to blame yourself.
To believe you’re somehow deficient.
Too much.
Too sensitive.
Too complicated to love.

None of that is true?

Your relationship struggles may have less to do with how much you love someone and more to do with whether your autistic nervous system experiences emotional and intimacy safety

Having emotional safety can bring significant change to your relationships, because it’s where you stop trying to become easier to love and start learning what allows your nervous system to feel secure enough to receive love.

Nobody is really having this conversation right now, so in today’s article, I explore emotional & intimacy safety through a neuroaffirming lens!

I also share the Autistic Intimacy Safety Framework™, a practical roadmap to help you communicate your needs without guilt, navigate differences in desire, strengthen emotional connection, and build relationships where you no longer have to choose between authenticity and belonging.

If relationships feel harder for you than they seem to for everyone else, this article will help you replace self-blame with understanding and show you a different path forward.

Most relationship advice was never written for autistic intimacy.

Autistic adults are far more likely to experience hypos*xuality, hypers*xuality, or as*xuality at different points in life. Yet most couples don’t realize these patterns are often rooted in sensory processing, nervous system regulation, interoception, masking, burnout, or trauma & not a lack of love or attraction.

That’s why so many conversations about s*x end in shame, rejection, or misunderstanding.

💙 The Autistic Intimacy Conversation Guide helps you talk about:
- What intimacy actually feels like in your body
- Your sensory needs, boundaries, and turn-offs
- Differences in desire without blame or pressure
- How to create intimacy that feels safe instead of overwhelming.
- What you need before, during, and after intimacy

The conversations are not set around having more s*x. The point is to build an intimacy that actually works for your autistic nervous system.

📖 Read the article on hypers*xuality, hypos*xuality, and as*xuality in autism to understand why these patterns happen and get the Autistic Intimacy Conversation Guide to finally have the conversations most couples never know how to start.

If you’re autistic and you’ve spent years wondering whether something was “wrong” with you s*xually,

you may have been missing the autistic context.

In today’s article, I unpack the differences between hypos*xuality, hypers*xuality, and as*xuality in autistic adults, why they happen, how they can change across different seasons of life, and how to stop confusing nervous system patterns with personal failure.

Autism Insiders (paid subscribers) also receive the bonus section on how to navigate these, along with The Autism Intimacy Conversation Guide, a practical resource to help you communicate your sensory needs, boundaries, desire, energy levels, and intimacy preferences with a partner without shame or guessing.

The right conversation can change a relationship. Understanding yourself can change your life.
