When S*x Becomes a Test of Masculinity

Many men have been taught that s*xual confidence means maintaining an er****on, lasting longer, and making a woman or**sm through pe*******on. But the traditional s*xual script often has little to do with what women actually need for s*xual pleasure.

For men, the pressure to perform can turn intimacy into an examination of masculinity, creating anxiety, self-consciousness, and fear of failure. Meanwhile, a focus on er****on quality and stamina can distract from what matters far more: understanding a partner's body, communicating openly, and discovering what genuinely feels good.

An er****on is not a measure of manhood. In*******se is not the only path to pleasure, and a woman's or**sm is not a test a man must pass.

S*x should be about mutual pleasure and connection, not proving your worth.

If s*xual pressure is affecting your confidence or relationship, this can change. Therapy with Dr. Valentino can help.

The way we experience love in childhood can quietly shape what we expect from love as adults. A daughter may learn from her father what strength, protection, and emotional availability look like. A son may learn from his mother what nurturing, independence, and emotional responsibility mean. Those lessons can follow us into marriage, intimacy, conflict, and the partners we choose.

And if you have children, they are watching you now. They are absorbing how you communicate, handle conflict, show affection, set boundaries, and treat one another.

You cannot change everything you learned growing up, but you can decide what you carry forward—and what you teach the next generation.

How much of your s*xual life belongs to you—and how much belongs in the relationship?

Not every fantasy needs to be disclosed. Having a private s*xual imagination does not mean someone is being dishonest with a partner, and not every unusual fantasy or preference needs to become a relationship discussion.

But there is an important line between **privacy and secrecy**.

When po*******hy begins interfering with partnered s*x, when a fe**sh becomes necessary for arousal, when fantasy starts replacing intimacy, or when a s*xual behavior is being deliberately hidden because a partner would reasonably consider it important, the issue changes. What was once private can become a relationship problem.

Healthy s*xual relationships do not require telling your partner every thought that crosses your mind. They do require honesty about the things that actually affect intimacy, trust, s*xual functioning, and consent.

If po*******hy, fe**shes, fantasy, secrecy, or differences in s*xual desire are creating tension in your relationship, s*x therapy can help you understand what is really happening and determine what needs to change.

We need to stop calling it “performance anxiety.”

For many successful men, particularly men who are accustomed to being in control, solving problems, competing, and producing results, the deeper issue is not simply anxiety about s*x. It is the belief that s*x is another area of life in which they are expected to perform.

An er****on is not a measure of masculinity. It is not a test of confidence, attractiveness, or worth. And it is certainly not a professional assignment that has to be successfully completed.

S*x is not a boardroom, an athletic competition, or another performance review. The goal is not to prove that you can always perform. The goal is to be present, connected, communicative, and able to experience pleasure without constantly evaluating yourself.

For men who have spent their lives succeeding through control, learning to let go of control in the bedroom can be difficult—but it can also fundamentally change the s*xual experience.

**You don't have to perform. You have to be present.**

Therapy with Dr. Valentino can help men address s*xual pressure, performance-based thinking, masculinity, erectile concerns, shame, and the cycle of self-monitoring that can interfere with s*xual confidence.

Can mature love exist without passion, s*x, and romance? Yes—but the relationship may become something different. Two people can remain deeply loving, loyal, emotionally connected, and genuinely devoted to one another while becoming primarily companions. The more difficult question is whether companionship alone is enough when one or both partners still long to feel desired, physically connected, flirted with, or romantically chosen. Mature love does not have to look like young love, but maturity should not require pretending that passion, s*xuality, touch, and romance no longer matter. When intimacy changes, honest conversations can help couples understand what has been lost, what has evolved, and what they truly want from their relationship now. Therapy with Dr. Valentino can help couples navigate these conversations with expertise, openness, and no judgment. Read the full article at www.DrValentino.nyc. *xTherapy *xualIntimacy

How much privacy is healthy in a relationship?

Should partners share passwords? Should spouses have access to each other’s phones? What changes when there has been infidelity, s*xting, secret messaging, or another breach of trust?

Privacy and secrecy are not the same thing. And transparency is not the same thing as surveillance.

After betrayal, it is understandable for the injured partner to want reassurance and greater openness. But rebuilding trust cannot ultimately depend on checking a phone or knowing every password. Trust has to be rebuilt through honesty, accountability, consistency, and behavior that demonstrates reliability over time.

The goal is not permanent surveillance. The goal is to reach a place where you no longer feel the need to investigate.

If digital boundaries, infidelity, jealousy, secrecy, or rebuilding trust are creating problems in your relationship, therapy can help you address what is actually happening beneath the conflict and establish healthier boundaries for both partners.

**When s*x becomes a test of masculinity, performance anxiety can become a cycle that is difficult to break alone.**

For many high-performing men, the expectation to be confident, capable, and in control extends into the bedroom. One episode of erectile difficulty can quickly become anxiety about it happening again—followed by self-monitoring, avoidance, shame, secrecy, and even greater pressure the next time.

This is one of the areas in which **Dr. Valentino specializes**. She works specifically with men experiencing s*xual performance anxiety, erectile difficulties related to anxiety, s*xual confidence concerns, and the psychological cycle of shame and avoidance that can follow.

**You do not have to accept this as your new normal. This can change.**

If you are accustomed to succeeding in every other area of your life, it can be particularly difficult to admit that s*x has become a source of anxiety. You do not have to manage it alone.

**Or**sm Equity: Why Women Need to Speak Up About S*xual Pleasure**

Why is it still so difficult for many women to say what they want in bed?

Many women have been taught to prioritize their partner’s pleasure, avoid appearing demanding, and accept s*x that may be intimate but not particularly satisfying. Meanwhile, most men would have a hard time remaining satisfied in a s*xual relationship if they rarely experienced or**sm themselves.

And here is something many couples never discuss: **a surprising number of men are unsure whether their long-term partners actually or**sm.**

Or**sm equity does not mean demanding an or**sm every time. It means recognizing that a woman’s pleasure deserves attention, communication, and consideration too.

Women do not need to fake pleasure to protect a partner’s ego. They can say what feels good, what does not, what they need more of, and what helps them reach or**sm. That is not being demanding. It is being an equal participant in their own s*xual experience.

Good s*x requires communication—not mind reading.

Mental health conversations about men are finally becoming more nuanced. Strength and emotional intelligence are not opposites—they often go hand in hand.

Many men are taught to suppress emotions, carry burdens alone, and prioritize resilience over vulnerability. Yet emotional awareness, meaningful relationships, and strong support networks are essential components of psychological well-being.

Healthy masculinity isn't about becoming less masculine. It's about expanding our understanding of strength to include self-awareness, communication, and connection.

In this week's article, Dr. Valentino explores:

• Why many men struggle to open up
• Emotional intelligence and attraction
• Healthy masculinity and modern relationships
• Male loneliness and friendship
• Emotional suppression and mental health
• Practical strategies for emotional well-being

Whether you're navigating relationships, stress, or simply seeking greater self-understanding, emotional growth is a lifelong skill worth developing.

Consent isn't just about hearing "yes" or "no." It's about communication, trust, respect, and ensuring both partners feel emotionally and physically safe throughout an intimate experience.

Healthy relationships thrive when partners can talk openly about boundaries, changing desires, emotional needs, and what helps them feel connected. Consent is not a one-time conversation—it's an ongoing dialogue that strengthens intimacy and deepens trust.

Learn how modern perspectives on consent are helping couples and individuals build healthier, more satisfying relationships in Dr. Valentino's latest article.
