Hi everyone! How's the new week treating you so far? :)
If you're wondering how to make it better, today's topic might help you. This week, I'd like to talk about the myths and reality behind some of the mostly accepted mind-transforming philosophies and techniques. They are often presented as something not for the ordinary mind, something so obscure that you need to possess some special abilities to practice these. In reality, there are simple levels and more complex ones. The simple ones are plenty to get us going.
Read away, let me know your thoughts, and have a great week!
Simplicity
Let's talk about simplicity. While there are many different methods to educate people about themselves, the foundation really lies in some basic principles:
Identifying the issue.
Identifying and analyzing our emotional reaction to the issue.
Recognizing that this issue is a chance for us to learn an important lesson about ourselves.
Figuring out what that lesson is, based on what we already know about ourselves.
Appreciating the fact that we have been given a chance to learn this lesson – in other words, turn our negative reaction into a positive one.
As you can see, the concept, really, is fairly simple. The more trying task is to master it, but it is extremely important to understand what it is we’re actually trying to grasp. This concept originates with Zen Buddhism and The Kabbalah principles.
Over the years, both teachings have gained countless adepts, who interpreted and reinterpreted these basic ideas in their own way. Nothing wrong with that, but it is important to know what the original sources are and to go back to them as often as needed to fact-check and to get clarification.
There are many books written on both subjects. My two favorites are ‘Taming Chaos’ by Rav Berg and ‘Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind’ by Shunryu Suzuki. Whenever anyone asks me about yet another “breakthrough” technique, I recommend that they turn back to the original teachings. Those are much fuller and far better composed, so they provide a clearer path to overcoming our issues.
Practice whatever meditations and exercises that work for you as often as you can. Remember, the process of transforming your mind is a slow and meticulous one, so take your time. Be patient with yourself, give yourself lots of praise for every achievement, no matter big or small. Concentrate on the process, and the results will follow.
