Rational Hydration — Chasing Away Autumn Dryness

Autumn has arrived, and the dry weather makes people feel like trees shedding their leaves—dehydrated. Girls all know that once autumn and winter come, keeping skin moisturized becomes difficult. Many people also feel thirsty and parched, with cracked lips. At such times, the first reaction is usually to grab a drink to hydrate, right? Yet no matter how much water they drink, many still feel their mouths are burning dry, and their itchy dry skin doesn’t improve.

In fact, this is not just simple dehydration, but a sign of deficient body fluids (Jin-Ye).

What is Jin-Ye?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), “Jin-Ye” refers to the body’s fluids. Aside from blood and the “essence” (Jing) stored in the organs, all other fluids in the body are considered Jin-Ye. These fluids are not just water, but also include various nourishing substances produced by the body. They moisten and nourish different parts of the body and also help regulate blood and many physiological functions. Within the body, Jin-Ye is extremely important.

Signs of Jin-Ye Deficiency

When body fluid is insufficient, the body feels dry. As mentioned before, the lack of body fluids can cause dryness in the mouth, eyes, and skin. On a deeper level, it can also disrupt metabolism. Other possible symptoms include constipation, reduced urination, and even palpitations.

Foods that Replenish Jin-Ye

At such times, drinking plain water alone is not enough. We need herbal remedies and foods that can help the body generate fluids. Examples include:

Dietary options: pear, honey, lily bulb, lotus seed, white fungus (tremella), watermelon, bitter melon, dark plum (wu mei), loquat, lotus root.

Herbal options: glehnia root (Bei Sha Shen), ophiopogon root (Mai D**g), rehmannia root (Sheng Di Huang), polygonatum (Yu Zhu), dendrobium (Shi Hu), asparagus tuber (Tian D**g).

As Autumn and Winter arrives, the dry weather causes people to lose body fluids. During this time, we must rationally replenish fluid. Let’s look at a few ways to do so.

1. Lily Bulb, White Fungus & Jujube Date Soup

Ingredients: 5g white fungus, 10g lily bulb, 3 red dates, rock sugar to taste.

Method: Soak the white fungus, then cook together with lily bulbs and red dates. Add rock sugar as desired.

Benefits: Nourishes the lungs and Yin, calms the heart and mind. Suitable for dry cough and restless sleep.

2. Ophiopogon & Polygonatum Tea

Ingredients: 5g ophiopogon root (Mai D**g), 5g polygonatum (Yu Zhu).

Method: Steep in hot water as a tea.

Benefits: Nourishes Yin and moistens dryness, relieves dry mouth and throat.
3. Fresh Orange & Honey Drink

Ingredients: 1 fresh orange, 1 spoon of honey.

Method: Juice the orange, mix with warm water, then stir in honey.

Benefits: Orange quenches thirst and generates fluids; honey moistens dryness and harmonizes the stomach.

4. Loquat & Snow Pear Drink

Ingredients: 4 loquats, 1 snow pear, rock sugar to taste.

Method: Cut loquats and pear into pieces, simmer with water for 20 minutes. Add rock sugar as desired, or blend into a juice.

Benefits: Moistens the lungs, stops cough, transforms phlegm, and generates fluids.

5. Dendrobium & Lily Bulb Congee

Ingredients: 10g dendrobium, 15g lily bulb, 50g rice.

Method: First decoct dendrobium to extract the juice, then add lily bulbs and rice to make congee.

Benefits: Nourishes the stomach and generates fluids, moistens the lungs and calms the spirit.
