Clouds don't protect you from UV rays. Neither does shade, a car window, or the winter sky. In Episode 4 of The Burning Truth, we prove it β€” and bust some of the most dangerous UV myths circulating online.

I'm Dr. Whitney Bowe β€” board-certified dermatologist and mom. UV doesn't take a day off. And once you see these experiments, neither will your sunscreen habit.

Joined by STEM expert Steve Spangler, Dr. Lindsey Zubritsky, Dr. Brianna Olamiju, and content creator Lisa Baisl, we put UV to the test β€” with real experiments, real science, and results you can see in real time.

What we prove:
☁ Clouds scatter UV β€” they don't block it
πŸͺŸ Car windows reduce UV but don't eliminate it
β˜‚ Shade helps, but UV still reaches you from multiple angles
πŸ” Snow reflects up to 80–90% of UV rays back at your skin
πŸŒ‘ More melanin does not mean full UV protection.

Expired sunscreen = risk of UV damage, which we KNOW significantly increases your risk of skin cancer. A few tips to share with your teens (and refresh your own memory!) to make sure you are protected:

1. Check the date on the back of the bottle! It should have a date listed either on the back or the seal of the bottle.
2. If you cannot find the expiration date, try to remember when the sunscreen was purchased. Generally it will be good 3 years from that date.
3. Make sure not to let your sunscreen bake in the hot sun– keep it in your bag or somewhere cool and shaded
4. Lastly- don't forget to reapply

You missed a spot β€” and the sun found it immediately. If you're applying sunscreen without knowing how much to use, how often to reapply, or what SPF actually means, you may not be as protected as you think.

I'm Dr. Whitney Bowe β€” board-certified dermatologist and mom. Sunscreen is not optional. It's foundational.

In Episode 3 of The Burning Truth, I'm joined by cosmetic chemist RamΓ³n Pagan and Triple Board-Certified Dermatologist Dr. Mamina Turegano to break down everything you need to know about SPF β€” from how sunscreen is actually manufactured in a lab to how to find the right formula for your skin and apply it correctly.

What we cover:
πŸ§ͺ How sunscreen is actually made β€” and why you can't replicate it at home β˜€ What SPF really measures β€” and what it doesn't tell you
πŸ’§ How to choose the right sunscreen for your skin type
πŸ– How much to use, when to reapply, and what most people get wrong

You've probably heard of PRP! PRFM takes it further. Instead of a liquid that disperses within hours, PRFM forms a scaffold in the skin that allows for a slower, more sustained release of growth factors into your skin over time.

PRFM gel filler is the newest evolution: that same PRFM, gently heated into a gel that can be injected like a filler- 100% from your own body. It's truly a "bio-fille" or what I like to call a "regenerative filler" because it uses regenerative aesthetics to create "biocues" that turn back time in your skin.

– What it does well: improves skin quality and texture. Provides subtle, natural-looking volume. Supports collagen over time.
– What it doesn't do: it is not a replacement for traditional fillers or Sculptra. It won't lift the face the way Sculptra can, and it won't fill hollows the way hyaluronic acid fillers do! But it's a great fit for many of my patients focused on skin health, natural results, and long-term regeneration who aren't necessarily ready for traditional fillers.

If you're frustrated that your deodorant isn't stopping sweat, it's not supposed to!

Deodorant mainly targets odor. Antiperspirant mainly blocks sweat and helps odor indirectly (less sweat = less bacterial growth).

In the U.S., deodorants are generally treated as cosmetics, while antiperspirants are regulated as drugs or cosmetic-drug combination products because they change sweat output. You may just be reaching for the wrong product!

Aluminum-based compounds are the main active ingredients in antiperspirants because they help temporarily block sweat from reaching the skin's surface.

As for concerns that aluminum-containing antiperspirants cause cancer: this claim has circulated for years, but current scientific evidence does not support it. The concern likely arose because underarm
antiperspirants are applied near the breast and because some people have hypothesized that aluminum compounds could have estrogen-like effects. However, major health organizations have not found evidence that antiperspirants or deodorants increase breast cancer risk.

The National Cancer Institute states that there is no scientific evidence linking antiperspirants or deodorants to breast cancer, and the American Cancer Society notes that most studies have not found a
link either.

Influencers making their own sunscreen at home rack up millions of views on social media. But can a DIY sunscreen made from beef tallow or coconut oil actually protect your skin from UV rays?

I'm Dr. Whitney Bowe, board-certified dermatologist and mom. When I see a viral trend that could genuinely harm the next generation's skin, I have to speak up with science, not opinions.

In Episode 2 of The Burning Truth, we bring science into the kitchen. Alongside professional Chef Eitan Bernath and chemistry professor Kate the Chemist , we tested two of the most viral DIY sunscreen recipes β€” beef tallow and coconut oil β€” for spreadability, stability, and UV protection. We then handed them to a lab.

The verdict: DIY your coffee order. Not your sunscreen.

What we tested:
πŸ§ͺ Spreadability β€” does it go on evenly enough to actually protect you?
🦠 Stability β€” no preservatives means one thing for mold
β˜€ UV Exposure β€” UV beads don't lie
