Korean American Medical Student Association - KAMSA We offer personalized mentorship programs and research opportunities with physicians in the Korean American Medical Association (K**A).

Korean American Medical Student Association (KAMSA) is a national organization that provides a platform for leadership, community service, and networking among Korean American medical students across the United States. The Korean American Medical Student Association, KAMSA, is a national organization committed to providing professional and informal networking and leadership opportunities for medical students of Korean heritage. We have regional chapters extending across the US, including NYC, Massachusetts, DC/MD/VA, Texas, and Georgia, and hope to grow even larger! While working closely with K**A, we hold various events from formal dinner gatherings to national conferences to simple and fun informal outings. As future Korean American doctors, we also value the importance of advocating for our community’s health concerns and KAMSA empowers the community to take responsibility for its overall well-being by organizing events addressing issues surrounding access to care, preventive measures and health literacy.

🙌 Want a mentor in medicine? Dr. Gina Kim-Ahn says it’s simpler than most people think.

Her advice for med students chasing leadership and advocacy roles: don’t wait to be picked — actively seek it out. Mentorship in medicine often starts small: you hear a physician leader speak, you read about a change they made, and instead of just admiring it from a distance — you reach out.

“You talked about this, or you talked about that... can I run my ideas by you?” That’s it. That’s the move.
Her point: be proactive, and you’ll be surprised how often people say yes.

🎙️ Dr. Gina Kim-Ahn on why Korean American medicine needs more leaders, not just more clinicians.

“Leaders have so much impact and change... we need people in those positions.” 🩺✨

Breast radiologist, retired Army physician, and longtime K**A leader Dr. Gina Kim-Ahn has spent her career watching how few leadership seats exist compared to the number of talented clinicians ready to fill them. In this clip, she opens up about why representation in leadership matters so much — not just for visibility, but for the real, tangible impact leaders have on the direction of medicine itself.

She’s watched K**A become more than a professional network — it’s become a lifelong community. And she wants more Korean American physicians, especially the next generation, to see themselves in those leadership roles.

What happens when curiosity doesn’t stop at the clinic? 🔬🩺

For Dr. Edwin Choy, becoming a physician wasn’t the end of his journey as a scientist. His MD-PhD gave him the opportunity to spend years immersed in scientific discovery—thinking through problems, designing experiments, and pursuing the questions that fascinated him.

From pure math and physics to medicine and cancer research, his path shows that you don’t always have to choose between being a clinician and being a scientist.
Sometimes, the best path is the one that lets you keep asking questions.

🎙️ Hear more about Dr. Choy’s journey, career choices, and perspective on discovery in the full K-Meds Talk episode.

What will medicine look like in 10, 20, or 30 years? 🤖🩺

Dr. Edwin Choy reflects on how rapidly healthcare is changing—from AI and new technologies to the evolving roles of physicians and advanced practice providers.

The future of medicine may look very different from what we know today. But one thing remains essential: understanding how these changes will impact patients, physicians, and the way care is delivered.

For students entering medicine today, the question isn’t just “What will my specialty look like?”—it’s also “How do I prepare for a healthcare system that is constantly changing?”

🎙️ Watch the full K-Meds Talk episode for more of Dr. Choy’s perspective on the future of medicine, oncology, research, and medical careers.

For Dr. John Won, medicine is about more than treating patients. It’s also about recognizing the struggles that came before you—and helping make the path easier for those who come after. 🇰🇷🩺

As a Korean American physician, Dr. Won saw firsthand the barriers many Korean immigrants faced, from language and economic challenges to having to retrain and rebuild their careers after coming to the U.S.
Those experiences became a major motivation for his involvement in the Korean American Medical Association (K**A)—and for his commitment to giving back to the community.

🤝 Leadership isn’t just about having a title. It’s about using your experience to support others, create opportunities, and pass it forward.

🎙️ Watch the full K-Meds Talk episode with Dr. John Won for more on his journey in medicine, leadership, mentorship, and service.
