Brainwaves 2026 brings together leaders across neurosurgery for two days of clinical insight, emerging approaches, and conversation. Today, we're highlighting the Spine Sessions taking place Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19.

Topics include:

• Spinal neuromodulation and functional recovery
• Lateral access surgery and evolving approaches to lumbar fusion
• Cervical spondylotic myelopathy
• Intramedullary spinal cord tumor resection
• Scoliosis in mothers and children

The award recognizes Dr. Sisti’s commitment to mentoring students in the Columbia University Health Sciences Exploration and Research Experience (CU-HERE), a summer program that introduces high school students from Harlem and the Bronx to careers in medicine and biomedical research.

Through his work with CU-HERE, Dr. Sisti has helped give aspiring physicians and scientists meaningful exposure to neurosurgery while continuing his longstanding commitment to education and mentorship.

Congratulations to Dean Chou, MD, on being named to Becker's Spine Review’s “20 Spine Surgeons to Know” list.

The list recognizes surgeons from across the country who are making an impact through clinical innovation, research, and leadership in spine care.

Dr. Chou, Chief of the Spine Division and Vice Chair of Neurosurgery at Columbia, was recognized for his leadership and contributions to the field, including his work advancing minimally invasive approaches for complex spine conditions.

His practice spans scoliosis, complex spinal deformity, spinal tumors and degenerative spine conditions, and he has authored more than 450 peer-reviewed publications while holding leadership roles across national spine organizations.

The recent Hybrid Neurosurgery Grand Rounds featured Luis Manuel Tumialán, MD, Professor of Neurological Surgery at Barrow Neurological Institute and Director of Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery at HonorHealth.

Dr. Tumialán presented “The Minimally Invasive Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion: An Evolution of a Technique (2008–2026),” tracing nearly two decades of progress in minimally invasive spine surgery.

Dr. Tumialán will also serve as Chair of the 2027 Spine Summit, one of the field’s premier meetings dedicated to advancing spine surgery.

Thank you to Dr. Tumialán for sharing his expertise with our faculty and trainees.
