Matt and Mike are headed to HYROX NYC as partners, and this is one of the strength moves built into their prep.
Between running, sled work, and lunges, HYROX asks a lot of each leg on its own, which is exactly why this exercise earns a spot on their prehab list. The rear-foot-elevated split squat helps build single-leg strength, balance, and control while challenging the quads, glutes, and hamstrings all at once. It can also help expose side-to-side differences that are easy to miss in bilateral lifts. For HYROX specifically, that matters. This movement trains the kind of lower-body strength and stability that carries over to powerful lunges, stronger sled work, and more efficient running when fatigue starts to set in.
Good luck to Matt and Mike this weekend, and stay tuned for more HYROX tips!
