For more than 20 years, I have had the privilege of working alongside Dr. Thomas Romo and The Baby Face Foundation, providing pro bono surgical care to children who otherwise might not have access to the specialized treatment they need.

Many of these children are born with complex facial and ear malformations that affect not only their appearance, but also their ability to hear. Restoring hearing at a young age can be life-changing, particularly during the critical years when speech and language skills are developing.

My role has been to reconstruct the auditory system when possible or, when appropriate, provide implantable hearing devices to help give these children the opportunity to hear, communicate, and connect with the world around them.

Over the years, I have been deeply honored to receive the Humanitarian Award and other recognition for this work. But the greatest reward has always been seeing the difference these surgeries can make in a child’s life.

I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Romo, The Baby Face Foundation, and everyone who has helped make this work possible for more than two decades.

Every child deserves the opportunity to be heard—and to hear the world around them. ❤️

☀️👂 Summer is here, and so are the ear problems that often come with swimming, traveling, and spending more time outdoors.

Common summertime ear issues include:
🏊 Swimmer’s Ear
💧 Trapped Water in the Ear
🦠 Ear Infections
✈️ Ear Pressure Changes During Flights and Diving

A few simple precautions can help keep your ears healthy all season long:
✔️ Dry your ears thoroughly after swimming
✔️ Consider earplugs if you spend a lot of time in the water
✔️ Avoid inserting cotton swabs or other objects into the ear canal
✔️ Seek evaluation if you experience persistent pain, drainage, fullness, or hearing changes

Don’t let ear pain interfere with your summer plans. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent more serious problems and get you back to enjoying the season.

Sudden hearing loss is not something to “wait and see.”

If you notice that your hearing has dropped suddenly in one ear — over hours or even a day or two — it may be Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss, a condition that requires immediate medical evaluation.

In many cases, treatment is most effective when started within 48–72 hours.

Too often, patients assume it is ear wax, sinus pressure, or a temporary blockage and delay care. Unfortunately, waiting can reduce the chance of recovering hearing.

Symptoms may include:• A sudden drop in hearing in one ear• A feeling of fullness in the ear• Ringing (tinnitus)• Muffled or distorted sound

Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can make a meaningful difference in hearing outcomes.

If you experience sudden hearing loss, seek evaluation by an ear specialist as soon as possible.

✈️ Traveling with Ménière’s Disease: What You Should Know

Living with Ménière’s disease doesn’t mean giving up travel—but it does mean planning smart.

Changes in pressure, dehydration, fatigue, and stress can all increase the risk of vertigo, fullness, tinnitus, or hearing fluctuations while traveling. With the right preparation, many patients travel safely and comfortably.

Travel tips for Ménière’s patients:
• Stay well hydrated—especially on flights
• Limit salt, caffeine, and alcohol before and during travel
• Get adequate rest and pace your itinerary
• Carry prescribed medications in your carry-on
• Choose aisle seating and avoid sudden head movements
• Manage stress—travel fatigue is a real trigger

If symptoms are frequent or unpredictable, a pre-travel consultation can help tailor a plan that keeps you safe and confident while away.

Winter weather doesn’t just affect your skin and sinuses — it can take a toll on your ears, too. ❄️👂
Cold temperatures, dry indoor air, and winter illnesses can all trigger uncomfortable ear symptoms.

Common winter-related ear issues include:
• Ear pain or aching in cold air
• Pressure or fullness
• Muffled hearing
• Increased tinnitus (ringing)
• Dizziness or balance changes

Cold air can irritate sensitive ear structures, while dry indoor heat and winter congestion can interfere with normal ear pressure and drainage.

Don’t ignore persistent symptoms.
What feels like a seasonal nuisance may signal an underlying ear condition that’s very treatable.

👨‍⚕️ Dr. Kohan provides expert evaluation and personalized care to keep your ears healthy all winter long.

If ear discomfort is lingering, worsening, or affecting your balance or hearing, a professional evaluation can make all the difference.
