The Icahn Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences offers leading-edge Master’s, PhD, dual-degree and non-degree programs in basic science, clinical research, public health, health care delivery, and genetic counseling, in addition to postdoctoral training opportunities. We are agilely positioned within the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS), and the expansive Mount Sinai Health System, in one of the most diverse and vibrant cities in the world, New York City, an international hub of biomedical innovation and industry. Participants will have opportunities to:

Tuesday marked the beginning of the school year for our Graduate Education in Public Health programs. Students heard from faculty and support staff about the resources available to them at our institution. They also had opportunities to connect with their peers and meet students from other programs. We concluded the day with a reception hosted by Department of Public Health Dean Rosalind Wright and Vice Chair Dania Valvi. Congratulations to our new students!

We’re proud to recognize Yuan Cheng, PhD, Xuanming (David) Guo, PhD, and Saren Seeley, PhD, as recipients of the 2026 Robin Chemers Neustein Postdoctoral Fellowship Award.

This prestigious fellowship supports exceptional postdoctoral scientists at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in biomedical science and exceptional promise as independent investigators.

This year’s recipients are advancing important research across neuroscience and psychiatry:

Yuan Cheng, PhD, explores how the brain supports cooperation and coordinated social behavior.

Xuanming (David) Guo, PhD, investigates how chronic psychosocial stress may contribute to neurovascular dysfunction and depression-related behavior.

Saren Seeley, PhD, studies the neural processes underlying emotion, learning, and decision-making, including mechanisms that may promote resilience and recovery.

We’re pleased to announce the appointment of Jamilia Sly, PhD, as the new Program Director of the Summer Undergraduate Research Program for Underserved Scholars (SURP4US) at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

An Associate Professor of Population Health Science & Policy, Oncological Sciences, and Family Medicine & Community Health, Dr. Sly brings extensive experience as a researcher, educator, mentor, and advocate for health equity.

In her new role, Dr. Sly will provide leadership for SURP4US and advance its mission to expand access to meaningful biomedical research experiences, mentorship, and professional development for undergraduate scholars from historically underserved backgrounds.

For Ayannah Riley, a Master of Public Health student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, preventing diabetes and obesity starts with empowering people with the knowledge and tools to make healthier choices. Through her focus on nutrition education, Ayannah is putting public health into practice and exploring how education and prevention can help address chronic disease and improve community health.

Her story highlights how students in Mount Sinai’s MPH program can connect their interests with real-world public health challenges and prepare to make a meaningful impact in the communities they serve.
