I am deeply saddened and concerned to inform our community that my dear friend and selfless leader, Aleksander “Aleks” Nilaj, has been taken into immigration detention and is currently facing deportation.
While I have known Aleks for many years, it was during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic that I truly witnessed the depth of his character and compassion. At a time marked by fear, loss, and uncertainty, Aleks stepped up as a humble, genuine, and tireless servant to our city.
Through his leadership with the Albanian American Open Hand Association, Aleks made sure that struggling families had food on their tables and that neighbors received immediate help—regardless of their faith, background, or origin. His hands-on altruism and dedication to humanity are qualities I have personally witnessed time and again.
As both an Imam and his friend, I want to express my deepest appreciation for his extraordinary service to our communities. His life is a testament to what it means to love and serve one's neighbors selflessly.
Aleks, your kindness, heart, and dedication will never be forgotten. You and your family remain in my continuous prayers. May God grant you strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time.

Today, we welcomed NYPD Community Affairs officers to Miraj Islamic School for an informative discussion with our 11th-grade students.

The officers spoke about career opportunities, online safety, cyberbullying, the NYPD Cadet and Explorer programs, and other opportunities available to young people.

We thank the officers for their time and commitment to helping our students make informed choices, stay safe, and explore opportunities for their future. Visits like these strengthen the connection between our youth and those who serve our city.

Governor Kathy Hochul Visits Albanian Islamic Cultural Center and Miraj Islamic School Ahead of Friday Prayer
STATEN ISLAND, NY — The Albanian Islamic Cultural Center and Miraj Islamic School had the honor of welcoming New York State Governor Kathy Hochul today for a special visit ahead of Friday Prayer. Governor Hochul was accompanied by New York State Assemblyman Charles Fall and members of her executive team.
During the visit, community leaders provided Governor Hochul and her delegation with a tour of the mosque, cultural center, and school facilities. Leadership took the opportunity to express their sincere gratitude to Governor Hochul for her landmark decision nominating and proclaiming January as Muslim Heritage Month in New York State, as well as her dedicated leadership in defending the civil rights, safety, and inclusion of all New Yorkers, including Muslim New Yorkers.
Governor Hochul expressed her deep admiration for the center and school’s commitment to serving the community and educating future generations. She commended the faculty, leadership, and community for providing a strong educational foundation grounded in community values, academic excellence, and civic engagement.
The visit concluded with warm exchanges and mutual commitments to continued collaboration in support of local education, civil rights, and community development.

It was an honor to visit the 72nd Precinct today and spend time with Deputy Inspector Mobeen Yasin and the dedicated men and women of the command. I offered my heartfelt prayers for the continued protection, health, and guidance of all who serve Sunset Park, Windsor Terrace, and our surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods. May God keep our officers safe on every tour as they work to uphold peace, justice, and community strength."

Despite the heavy rain and tough weather, today’s Muslim American Day Parade in New York City was an incredible success! The warmth, resilience, and spirit of our community shone right through the clouds.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who braved the elements to stand with us today. We are deeply grateful to our elected officials, the dedicated members of the NYPD Muslim Officers Society, the FDNY, our bright students, and every single community member who attended and helped organize this beautiful event.
Most of all, a special thank you to the City of New York for always welcoming us, supporting our community, and providing a place where diversity and faith can thrive together. It is a true blessing to witness such unity, dedication, and strength. 🌧️🕊️🏙️
