⏲️ 60 seconds drug review: Common Side Effects 💊

💊 All drugs are associated with adverse effects. Some of these adverse effects are common and expected, some are serious and require discontinuation, while others are due to interactions with substances such as alcohol.

🧠 Familiarity with potential side effects is essential for patient education and to help minimize patient concerns.

📝 Often, patients show up with complaints related to a new medication. Check out today's quiz to see if you can think of some medications that are associated with a common side effect.

🌟 Tips for counseling on these side effects:

👉🏻 Constipation: ensure the patient is on a bowel regimen when starting these medications (ex: docusate, senna)

👉🏻 Dry cough: switch to an alternative class (ARBs have a less incidence of dry cough)

👉🏻 Orangish discoloration of urine: educate patients that this effect is harmless and will go away after they stop taking the drug

👉🏻 Disulfiram-like reaction when taken with alcohol: avoid alcohol while taking this medication and for 3 days after the last dose. This includes alcohol in mouthwash or cough or cold syrups.

👉🏻 Severe diarrhea: ensure patient is on an anti-diarrheal medication such as loperamide while taking this drug

👉🏻 Myopathies and rhabdomyolysis: if severe, discontinuation of the drug and switch to an alternative medication

👉🏻 Dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention: often these side effects are wanted to treat a symptom (ex: urinary incontinence). If so, monitor for other anticholinergic side effects and if the patient is not tolerating then switch to an alternative medication.
