A beautiful evening aboard JS Kashima of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, which came to New York in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary — on the Hudson River, just across from the Statue of Liberty. 🇺🇸🇯🇵

What a meaningful way to celebrate America’s birthday, surrounded by the friendship between Japan and the United States.

Rear Admiral Ryoko Azuma was truly inspiring — so poised, strong, and cool. 😎 As Japan’s first female admiral, she is paving the way for so many women.

It was also wonderful to meet the young trainees and see the next generation growing into leadership. I hope more women continue to rise in fields once seen as male-dominated. 😍

I also enjoyed chatting with Consulate physician Dr. Morita, a former Japan Self-Defense Forces doctor, and his senior physician colleague, who is currently serving as the onboard physician for the 400 crew members since March.

A memorable evening of friendship, respect, and inspiration.

A very special moment for me.

Earlier this year, I had the honor of establishing my first scholarship, “The Mika Hayashi Award,” through the Japanese American Association’s program for high school seniors.

Because I was unable to attend the gala at the Harvard Club, I could not present it in person to our very first awardee.

Before leaving for West Point Military Academy, Julien Crampe kindly came to visit me at my office. Meeting him in person made this moment even more meaningful.

As our office celebrates its 20th anniversary, I feel deeply grateful to give back to the community that has supported us for so many years, and to support the next generation as they take their own brave steps forward.

Congratulations again, Julien. We are so proud to be a small part of your journey and wish you continued success at West Point and beyond.

Yesterday at the Japan Parade in NYC 🇯🇵🇺🇸🌸

This event is truly rooted in the community — something people look forward to every year including a westie 🐶! I was grateful to watch from across the main stage and feel the energy of the ceremony, taiko performances, parade, street fair, and Japanese food.

Thankfully, the weather held off for the ceremony, and even when it rained afterward, the spirit stayed bright.

Photos with JAA / JAANY President Mr. Koji Sato, the official unveiling of “Happi” by manga artist Acky Bright, Ambassador Katahira giving a speech with the Haappi’s costume, and many joyful moments from the day.
