Your DONA leadership team – representing more than 5,000 member doulas from 54 countries – is committed to identifying and eliminating processes, practices and perspectives that perpetuate racism and discrimination within our organization and the broader birthing community. While we have made progress toward that end, we still have a long way to go.

Beginning this month, we will undergo an internal audit with the help of a consultant who specializes in diversity, equity and inclusion. Part of this effort will involve surveying our members to help us understand DONA’s racial-ethnic climate from your perspective. We hope this exercise will expose our blind spots and show us how to create a more inclusive culture that values the humanity of every individual.

Our anti-racism work will also include examining and rebuilding our approach to social media. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are powerful platforms, and we apologize for instances where our posts have been careless, imperceptive or hurtful to Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). To help remedy this going forward, we are expanding an oversight committee and empowering them to develop and implement clear policies surrounding social media content and engagement – including how we respond to any post that unintentionally inflicts harm upon our doula community.
