There is a place inside all of us where instinct and wisdom collide — where fear rises fast and loud, and something steadier tries to answer.

At the center of this piece sits the mind itself — the place where emotion, memory, survival, and choice all meet. Beneath it stands the bulldog: tense, alert, ready to react. It represents that ancient survival system inside us — the protector, the alarm, the part that learned to move before it had time to understand. It was built to keep you alive, not necessarily at peace.

When life becomes heavy through trauma, anxiety, addiction, or chaos, that system can become overactive. It starts barking at shadows. Firing at danger even when none exists. But that does not make it evil. It means it learned survival too well.

Above the mind sits the owl with wings spread wide — representing decision making, perspective, and higher reasoning. The owl does not destroy the bulldog beneath it. It balances it. It slows things down long enough to see what is actually happening instead of reacting only to what fear says might happen.

That is the tension inside this sculpture. Not the elimination of instinct… but learning how to guide it. Not silencing the noise… but learning not to let it choose your direction.

This piece represents the quiet work of healing and emotional regulation — recognizing that even within fear, contradiction, survival, and struggle, there is still a part of you capable of choosing.
