Our New Castle County 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 (𝗔𝗧𝗥𝗖), partnering with the Delaware Division for the Visually Impaired (DVI), hosted a group of students as part of a two-day college immersion experience.

The post-secondary exploration event is part of DVI’s Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) program that gives high school students the opportunity to experience a taste of college life.

Senior Assistive Technology Manager Madeline Laquer showed students the wide variety of assistive technology devices available in the ATRC designed to support people with visual impairment and other disabilities to learn, communicate and be successful at work and in their daily lives.

Individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD) are more likely to interact with police than people without I/DD, but not all law enforcement officers have the skills or training to understand the population, particularly in high stress situations.

Last week, representatives from the University of Delaware and the 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺 (𝗗𝗡𝗘𝗔) participated in a panel entitled, “Improving Law Enforcement Interactions with People with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities in Delaware” at the Northeastern Association of Criminal Justice Sciences (NEACJS) Annual Conference.

Pictured (left to right) are: Chuck Sawchenko, MSW, Retired Lieutenant, Delaware State Police, consultant, and law enforcement trainer, Alisha Fletcher, DSW, LCSW, director of the DNEA and Dana Holz, PhD, associate scientist, Center for Drug and Health Studies at the University of Delaware, who discussed initiatives including first responder autism training, traffic stop training and resources, research and resource development related to crisis events and the Blue Envelope program.
