For more than 70 years, Newark-Wayne Community Hospital has been a place where families have welcomed new life - and we understand how meaningful that is to our community.
Today, we are sharing that, due to changing community needs, declining delivery rates across the region, and ongoing workforce challenges, Rochester Regional Health (RRH) has made the difficult decision to start the state process to end inpatient labor and delivery (L&D), newborn nursery, and postpartum services at Newark-Wayne.
Pending final approval by the New York State Department of Health (DOH), the potential closure date for the Marshall Birthing Center could come in late summer/early fall 2026.
We know this news may bring questions and concerns, especially for expecting families. Please know:
- Labor & Delivery services at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital will continue during the approval and transition period, after which deliveries will transition to RGH and other appropriate facilities.
- Our OB/GYN office in Newark will remain OPEN for prenatal and outpatient OB/GYN care, both before and after deliveries have been transitioned out of the birthing center.
- All other services and departments at Newark-Wayne Community Hospital remain open and fully operational for the community.
- Expectant parents will receive personalized support and guidance every step of the way.
We have already begun contacting patients who may be impacted. If you are planning to deliver at the Marshall Birthing Center, your care team will reach out directly to help coordinate a seamless transition of care.
We know this change may feel uncertain, but we are here for our patients and our community, and will walk alongside you every step of the way.
