Choosing cremation is only one part of planning. Families also have choices about what happens with the cremated remains afterward.

Some may choose to:
• Keep the remains in an urn at home
• Bury or place the urn in a cemetery
• Scatter the remains in a meaningful location
• Divide remains among family members in smaller keepsake urns
• Incorporate a portion into jewelry, memorial pieces or another lasting tribute

There is no single “right” choice. What matters is considering what feels meaningful to you and your family — and, when possible, communicating those wishes ahead of time.

Our funeral directors can help families understand the options available and the questions to consider when making that decision: https://pulse.ly/exaoikgpqp

Being a good neighbor often comes down to something simple: noticing when someone could use a little help.

That can be especially meaningful for a neighbor who is grieving.

Consider dropping off a meal, offering to pick up groceries, helping with yard work, bringing in the trash cans, or simply checking in.

And remember that support is often needed well beyond the first few days after a loss. A phone call or small gesture several weeks later may arrive exactly when it is needed most.

On National Good Neighbor Day, we're grateful for all the ways people throughout our Delaware communities continue to show up for one another.

It may feel early to be thinking about the holidays, but the weeks ahead often bring something increasingly rare: several generations of a family together in the same place.

That can also create an opportunity for conversations we sometimes put off.

Do your parents have plans in place? Do you know where important documents are kept? Have they shared what is important to them or what they would want their family to know?

These conversations do not have to happen all at once, and they do not need to begin with every decision already made.

Sometimes the most important first step is simply asking.

Pre-planning can help families document personal wishes ahead of time and make future decisions less uncertain. Our licensed pre-planning professionals are available when your family is ready to begin that conversation.

When we say a service should be personalized, that does not necessarily mean it needs to be elaborate.

Often, the smallest details tell the biggest stories.

It could be:
• Photographs that capture important moments
• Music that immediately reminds everyone of them
• A hobby or collection they loved
• Treasured objects that tell part of their story
• Military, professional or community connections that mattered to them
• Family traditions that simply feel like them

There is no formula for honoring someone's life.

Our funeral directors begin by listening to the family and helping them determine which details will make the service meaningful and personal to the person they love: https://pulse.ly/wimxt3peym

The first day of fall brings familiar sights, scents and traditions — cooler mornings, changing leaves, favorite foods and the return of seasonal routines.

Memories are often connected to those small details.
For someone who is grieving, the change of season may bring comforting memories of a loved one. It may also bring an unexpected reminder of their absence.

Both reactions are part of a grief journey that is personal and rarely moves in a straight line.

As the season changes, give yourself permission to hold onto the traditions that bring comfort, change the ones that feel difficult and make room for whatever memories arise: https://pulse.ly/wfl6f2w6lw

Back-to-school season is a good reminder that learning happens in all kinds of places — and sometimes in unexpected careers.

Spicer-Mullikin is proud to support science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in Delaware. Members of our team have had the opportunity to visit local schools and speak with students about the funeral profession, including the science, technology, and specialized skills involved in our work.

As students settle into another school year, we’re proud to support opportunities that encourage curiosity, learning, and a greater understanding of the many ways STEM is used every day.

Going to a funeral or visitation can sometimes leave us wondering what to say or do.

Often, simply being present is what matters most.

A few things to keep in mind:
• Keep condolences simple and sincere. Sharing a fond memory can also bring comfort.
• Avoid asking for details about the loss. Allow the family to share what they are comfortable discussing.
• Offer specific help. Instead of “Let me know if you need anything,” consider offering a meal, a ride or help with an errand.
• Give the family your attention. Silence your phone and be present during the service.

Most importantly, remember why you are there: to support someone you care about.

The days immediately following a loss are often filled with calls, visits, arrangements, and support from others.

In the weeks and months that follow, things can become quieter. Grief, however, does not follow the same timeline.

Our commitment to families extends beyond the service. Spicer-Mullikin offers ongoing grief support that includes resource materials, individual support ,and grief support groups designed for different needs and stages of life.

When we serve your family, you become a member of the extended Spicer-Mulllikin family. Whether your loss was recent or some time ago, support is available when you need it: https://pulse.ly/cytkucbrnj

Social media makes it possible to share important news with family and friends almost instantly. After a loss, however, taking a moment before you post can be an important way to show respect.

Before sharing:
• Make sure the immediate family has had the opportunity to personally notify those closest to them.
• Don't assume that details shared with you privately are meant to be public.
• Follow the family's lead before posting photographs or tagging relatives.
• Keep public comments supportive rather than asking for details.
• If you're unsure whether something should be shared, reach out privately first.

Social media can be an important source of connection and support during grief. A thoughtful pause can help make sure it stays that way.
