William Funk, MD, is a graduate of Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and completed his family medicine residency at Medical Center of Delaware. When a hijacked plane struck the North Tower, window washer Jan Demczur and five other men were trapped inside an express elevator around the 50th floor.

The elevator had dropped down the shaft before coming to a stop, leaving them stranded with smoke beginning to enter the car.

After forcing the elevator doors open, they discovered a solid wall in front of them because the express elevator had no normal opening on that floor. They tried cutting through the drywall with a pocketknife before using parts of Demczur’s window-washing squeegee. Working together, they eventually broke a hole large enough to crawl through into a nearby restroom.

The six men then made their way down the stairs and escaped the building only minutes before the North Tower collapsed. Demczur unknowingly carried the squeegee handle out in his pocket. Weeks later, his wife found it wrapped up with his dirty work clothes.

Today, the battered handle is preserved by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History.
