We used to think of skeletal muscle primarily as a mechanical tissue that contracts, moves the skeleton, and burns energy. We now know that muscle is also an endocrine organ. When muscle contracts, it releases myokines, signaling molecules that communicate with tissues throughout the body.

One of the hormones produced by muscle is irisin. Irisin is being investigated for its role in glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, mitochondrial function, brain health and the muscle–brain axis.

For women, this conversation becomes particularly important as they move through hormonal transitions such as menopause. Declining estrogen can alter body composition and metabolic health, making preservation of muscle mass and function increasingly important.

But here’s the nuance: Irisin isn’t the reason exercise works. Exercise creates a complex orchestra of signals, including myokines, metabolites, neural signals and hormonal responses. Irisin is one instrument in that orchestra.

We’re still learning exactly how important each instrument is. The bigger message is much simpler: Muscle is metabolic tissue. Muscle is endocrine tissue. Muscle is communication tissue. So don’t train only for appearance. Train for the messages your muscles send to the rest of your body.

Uterine prolapse is more than a pelvic floor issue.

It can occur when the tissues supporting the uterus become weakened or stretched. Pregnancy, childbirth, hormonal changes, ageing and repeated strain can all contribute.

But the pelvic floor is part of a larger movement system, working together with the hips, pelvis, spine, core and breathing to support the body, manage pressure and control movement.

At Harakaty, we use functional movement to strengthen the pelvic floor while improving how the hips, pelvis, spine, core and breathing work together to support movement and manage load.

We don’t isolate the pelvic floor. We strengthen the support system around it, helping restore the support and control needed to help bring the uterus back toward its optimal position.

Have you every stopped to watch how your child moves?

It all starts with the first step.

When a child begins to walk, every step gives the nervous system information from the feet, fascia, muscles, joints, skin and organs, and the body adapts.

As the child grows, the brain continues to refine how the body moves based on what it has learned.

And this is where it gets interesting.

The brain doesn’t necessarily recognise an asymmetrical movement pattern as a problem. It simply learns it.
So the body adapts.

Because movement is connected, an imbalance at the feet can ripple through the kinetic chain, affecting the knees, hips, pelvis, spine and shoulders.

One compensation can lead to another.

And over time, what started as a subtle movement pattern can become deeply established, contributing to restrictions, dysfunction and pain.

By adulthood, the body may simply be moving the way it learned to move years ago.

That’s why paying attention to how your child stands, walks, runs and moves as they grow matters. Small movement differences can be easy to overlook, but understanding them early can help you support healthier movement as your child develops.

Muscle performance starts at the cellular level. Movement requires energy. Adaptation improves how we produce it.

Deep within every muscle fibre are thousands of mitochondria, tiny powerhouses that produce ATP, the energy needed for muscle contraction, repair, recovery and adaptation.

As you move and exercise consistently, your muscles demand more energy. In response, the body adapts by increasing mitochondrial capacity and improving its ability to produce energy efficiently.

This supports improved endurance, energy availability and resistance to fatigue.

So building stronger muscles isn’t just about increasing muscle size. It’s about improving the cellular systems that power, support and sustain movement.

Your body is not a collection of separate parts. It’s one integrated system, with the brain constantly interpreting information from your muscles, joints, fascia, connective tissue, skin and organs.

Fascia and connective tissue are an important part of this system. They form a continuous network throughout the body and contain sensory receptors that communicate with the nervous system.

When something becomes dysfunctional, whether it’s pain, restricted mobility, tension, injury or poor movement, the effects don’t always stay local.

The nervous system responds by adapting. It may increase muscle tension, alter movement, limit mobility or avoid painful positions.

Over time, these protective responses can become learned patterns. But the brain can adapt to new movement patterns.

Through neuroplasticity, the nervous system continually adapts to the information and movement it experiences.

And this is where functional movement matters. Movement, loading, balance, proprioception, coordination, breathing and changes in position provide the brain with meaningful sensory information, helping it understand how the body is moving and how it can move safely.

The painful area isn’t always the source of the problem.
Pain may be the signal. Dysfunction may be somewhere else.

Functional movement is therefore not simply about stretching what feels tight or strengthening what feels weak. It improves the communication between the brain and body.

Because when we change how we move, we change the information the brain receives.

The body moves.
The nervous system interprets.
The brain adapts.

Your muscles don’t grow in the gym, they grow after the gym.

Every repetition, every step, and every movement creates a demand for energy. That energy comes from tiny structures inside your muscle cells called mitochondria. When they’re healthy, they provide the ATP (cellular energy) needed to repair muscle fibers, build new proteins, and help you recover stronger. When they’re damaged, your muscles simply don’t have the energy they need to adapt efficiently.

The good news? Mitochondria are incredibly adaptable. Regular movement, progressive strength training, nutritious whole foods, quality sleep, stress management, and adequate recovery all encourage your body to build healthier, more efficient mitochondria.

The sacroiliac (SI) joint is the bridge between your spine and pelvis, helping transfer forces every time you move. When its normal function is disrupted, whether by mechanical overload, injury, pregnancy, inflammatory conditions or other contributing factors, it can cause pain in the lower back, buttock, hip, or groin.

While some causes require medical treatment, the way your body moves can have a significant impact on the amount of stress placed on the SI joint.

At Harakaty, we identify the movement dysfunctions and compensations contributing to ongoing SI joint overload. Through functional movement, we restore more efficient movement patterns, improve force transfer, reduce unnecessary stress on the joint and support your recovery.
