University Hospital has once again earned the LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader designation in the 2026 Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), the highest recognition awarded by the Human Rights Campaign.

In its 17th edition, the HEI evaluated nearly 2,300 health care facilities nationwide, with 741 participating in the 2026 survey. Only 323 facilities achieved a perfect score of 100 and received the LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader designation.

University Hospital is proud to be one of only nine hospitals in New Jersey to receive this top recognition, reflecting its ongoing commitment to inclusive, equitable, and affirming care for LGBTQ+ patients, visitors, and employees through strong policies, training, and a culture rooted in dignity and respect.

Nine NJ hospitals were named an LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader, the highest designation awarded in the 2026 Healthcare Equality Index.

7th Precinct Commanders Captain M. Hulse, and Executive Officer Lieutenant G. Caballero, proudly welcomed technicians and staff of University Hospital’s Mammography Bus to Newark School Stadium, located at the corner of Bloomfield Avenue and Abington Avenue.

Captain Hulse and Lt. Caballero thank the hospital staff members for their commitment to providing vital breast health services and increasing access to preventative care for Newark resident. This mobile mammogram’s unit’s dedication to the health and well-being of our community is greatly appreciated, and we are honored to support this important initiative.

University Hospital is proud to announce that our EMS program has become the first in the United States to receive AABB accreditation for a pre-hospital blood transfusion program.

As the only state-designated Level I Trauma Center in Northern New Jersey, University Hospital continues to set the standard for emergency and critical care. This landmark achievement recognizes the exceptional collaboration between our EMS, blood bank, laboratory, and trauma teams and reinforces our commitment to delivering innovative, life-saving care when and where patients need it most.

By bringing blood transfusions directly to patients in the field, our teams are helping improve survival and outcomes during the most critical moments of care.

Throughout Nurses Appreciation in the month of May, we proudly celebrated the extraordinary nurses and supporting staff who make a difference in the lives of our patients every single day.

From Crazy Sock Day and our sweet Ice Cream Social to Nurses Bloom Day, the Blessing of the Hands, Day of Remembrance, Superhero Day, Day of Gratitude, and so much more, each event was a special opportunity to recognize the compassion, dedication, resilience, and excellence that our team brings to patient care.

A special thank you to Nurse Management- Edna Larose & Amanda Hackett for sponsoring our Ice Cream Social and to Nutcha Elianor, UHCC Health Educator, who brought smiles throughout the Cancer Center by serving three delicious flavors of ice cream while playing classic ice cream truck music for staff and employees.

These celebrations reminded us that nursing is more than a profession—it’s a calling. We are incredibly grateful for every nurse, technician, navigator, assistant, and support team member who helps provide exceptional care, comfort, and hope to our patients and families.

This week, University Hospital partnered with the New Jersey Reentry Corporation to host an important discussion on the future of Medicaid and the challenges many eligible individuals may face in maintaining their coverage under new federal requirements.

The event brought together healthcare leaders, policymakers, advocates, students, and community members to examine the impact these changes may have on individuals and families across New Jersey. Moderated by Jim McGreevey, attendees heard from state leaders, policy experts, and community advocates, as well as University Hospital experts including President & CEO Carole Johnson, Dr. Petros Levounis, Chief of Psychiatry; Joanelle Bailey, M.D., M.P.H., Pediatric Trauma Director and Lois V. Greene DHA, SVP for Population Health. Together, speakers highlighted the critical role Medicaid plays in supporting access to mental health services, trauma care, preventive care, and other essential healthcare services.

Thank you to the New Jersey Reentry Corporation and everyone who joined us for this timely and meaningful event. As New Jersey's only public hospital, University Hospital remains committed to advocating for our patients, addressing barriers to care, and working alongside community partners to improve health outcomes for all. Last week, University Hospital celebrated Trauma Appreciation Day, honoring the dedication and life-saving work of our trauma team.

The event was hosted by Dr. Adam D. Fox, Trauma Medical Director, and featured remarks from UH President and CEO Carole Johnson, Nancy Munoz, along with a powerful patient family testimonial that highlighted the impact of expert, compassionate trauma care. Chaplain ET Stoddart also shared reflections during the event.

An award recognition ceremony also honored staff members who go above and beyond every day in their commitment to patient care, excellence, and service to the community.

As Northern New Jersey’s only Level I Trauma Center, the Eric D. Muñoz Trauma Center at University Hospital delivers the highest level of emergency care when every second counts.
