Friday Faces at OPT 💙

Meet Heidi, one of our incredible COTAs!

What inspired her to pursue occupational therapy? Watching her grandfather regain the skills he needed to cook again after a stroke. Seeing firsthand how therapy can help someone return to the activities they love showed Heidi the true impact of this profession, and sparked a passion that's still evident in her work today.

At OPT, we're lucky to have professionals like Heidi who bring creativity and purpose into every session.

"It's not a team, it's a family." - Lauren, COTA

When we asked a few of our therapists what they love most about OPT, one answer kept coming up again and again: the people.

At OPT, collaboration is built into everything we do. Our team knows that the best outcomes always happen when we work together.

At OPT, we believe great therapists never stop growing, which is why ongoing mentorship, training opportunities, and professional development days are such important parts of our culture. From seasoned OTs/PTs to those newer in their careers, our team is always learning, sharing knowledge and helping each other succeed.

But beyond the training and clinical expertise, what makes OPT special is the genuine care our team has for each other, because when you feel supported, you can show up as your best self for your team and for the students and families you serve.

And if you're an OT, PT, COTA, or PTA who is looking for that kind of environment, we'd love to meet you. Click the link below to join us. ✨

Creating shapes doesn’t have to start with a worksheet ✏️💙

Before children can draw shapes on paper, they first need opportunities to explore, build, and understand them through play.

That’s why OTs love using materials like Play-Doh, popsicle sticks, and pipe cleaners.

By building shapes with their hands first, children can gain confidence and a better understanding of how shapes are formed, making it easier to draw them later on.

Save this idea to try at home!

One of the most rewarding parts of pediatric therapy is getting to celebrate milestones, both big and small, alongside children and their families. 💙

From gaining confidence in everyday tasks to reaching goals that once felt impossible, it’s the little moments of progress that make this work so meaningful.

Here are a few things our therapists had to say about the most rewarding part of helping kiddos thrive every day.

We are endlessly inspired by the children, families, and therapists we work with, and feel so grateful to be part of such a supportive and compassionate community.

If brushing teeth is a battle every night… try this first 🪥💙

For many children, tooth brushing can feel overwhelming because of the sensation, sound, texture, or unpredictability. Starting with playful, low-pressure exposure can help make the experience feel safer and more familiar over time.

Try:
✔ brushing dolls or toys first
✔ using an electric toothbrush on arms/hands
✔ making it part of play instead of a rushed routine

Small steps and gradual exposure can make a huge difference in building comfort and confidence. ✨

Transitions can feel overwhelming for many children throughout the day 💙

Visual schedules help create predictability, reduce anxiety, and support smoother transitions between activities by helping children understand what comes next.

Sometimes a little structure can make a BIG difference ✨

Why do OTs actually LOVE broken crayons? 👀

Tiny crayons naturally encourage children to use a tripod grasp, helping support the finger positioning needed for handwriting development without constantly correcting their grip. 💙

So before you throw away those broken crayons… you may want to keep them around 😉

Nothing says summer like a cold Rita’s treat after a long day of helping kiddos grow, learn, and thrive 💙

This week, we surprised our amazing OT & PT team with Rita’s on a hot day as a small thank you for all they do for the children and families we serve every single day.

We’re so grateful for a team that brings compassion, patience, and creativity into every session. 🍧🫶

The best team deserves the best treats. 😎
