🦶 Rolled Your Ankle? Don’t Brush It Off.
Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries — especially in athletes — but they’re also one of the most under-rehabilitated. That’s why so many people deal with repeat sprains or long-term ankle instability.
⚠️ What’s Really Going On?
The most common ankle sprain is an inversion sprain, where the ankle rolls inward and stresses the ligaments on the outside of the ankle.
👉 These account for ~85% of all ankle sprains, with the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) most often involved.
________________________________________
🔍 Risk Factors for Re-Injury
✔ Previous ankle sprain (biggest risk factor)
✔ Poor balance or ankle control
✔ Shoe type or lack of support
✔ High-intensity or long-duration activity
A prior sprain can weaken stabilizers and disrupt proprioception — making repeat injury more likely if not rehabbed properly.
________________________________________
🚩 Signs You Should Pay Attention To
• Swelling or bruising
• Tenderness around the ankle
• Difficulty weight-bearing
• Pain with walking or activity
👉 If you’re unable to bear weight or have bony tenderness, an X-ray may be needed to rule out a fracture (Ottawa Ankle Rules).
________________________________________
⏱️ Typical Recovery Timelines
🟢 Mild sprain: ~2 weeks
🔴 More severe sprain: 4–6 weeks, progressing through normal tissue-healing phases

💪 How Physical Therapy Helps
At Advanced Orthopedic Physical Therapy, we don’t just wait for swelling to go down — we rehab the ankle so it’s ready for real life.
PT may include:
✔ Restoring ankle range of motion
✔ Balance & proprioception training
✔ Strengthening in all directions
✔ Education on bracing & injury prevention
👉 If you’ve sprained your ankle — recently or in the past — let’s make sure it heals right.

🏋️‍♂️ Shoulder Pain or Instability? It Might Be a Labrum Tear.
The shoulder labrum is a ring of cartilage that helps form the “socket” of the shoulder joint. When it’s injured, the shoulder can feel painful, weak, or unstable — especially with lifting or overhead movements.
Labral tears can happen from a single traumatic event or develop gradually from repetitive stress.
________________________________________
⚠️ Common Causes
✔ Traumatic injuries (dislocation, heavy lifting, falls on an outstretched arm)
✔ Repetitive overhead motions (throwing, serving, lifting)
✔ Muscle weakness or pre-existing joint instability
A common type of labral injury is a SLAP tear, often seen in baseball, softball, and other overhead athletes.
________________________________________
🚩 Signs & Symptoms to Watch For
• Pain at the top of the shoulder
• Popping, catching, or clunking with movement
• One-sided shoulder weakness
• Feeling like the shoulder may “slip” or pop out
________________________________________
💪 How Physical Therapy Helps
For many labral tears, conservative care works — especially when addressed early.
At Advanced Orthopedic Physical Therapy, treatment may include:
✔ Hands-on manual therapy to reduce pain
✔ Strengthening the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles
✔ Stretching to correct movement imbalances
✔ Postural education to reduce strain
✔ A customized home exercise program
If surgery is needed, physical therapy is also essential before and after surgery to restore strength, motion, and function safely.

🌱 Yard Work Season Is Here — Is Your Body Ready?
Advanced Orthopedic Physical Therapy, P.C.
Oregon sunshine is finally back ☀️ which means it’s time for yard work, gardening, and outdoor projects. While getting outside is great for your health, we see a big spike in back, shoulder, knee, and neck pain this time of year.
🧤 Quick check — comment YES if you’ve ever felt sore after yard work:
✔ Digging or planting
✔ Weeding or mulching
✔ Raking or lifting bags of soil
✔ Kneeling for long periods
Gardening uses muscles and joints in ways many of us aren’t used to — especially if you’ve been less active over the winter.
________________________________________
🌿 Tips to Avoid Aches & Pains While Gardening
✔ Warm up first — even a 10-minute walk helps
✔ Change positions often
✔ Take breaks when something starts to ache
✔ Use carts or wheelbarrows for heavy loads
✔ Use knee pads or kneel on one knee
✔ Bend at the hips and knees, not your back
✔ Keep wrists neutral when pulling or lifting
✔ Finish with gentle walking and stretching
Small adjustments in body mechanics can make a big difference.

🦵 Shin Splints? Let’s Talk.
Advanced Orthopedic Physical Therapy, P.C.
🏃‍♀️ Runner or jumper — quick check:
Do any of these sound familiar?
⬇️ Comment YES if you’ve felt:
✔ Pain along the front of your lower leg (shin)
✔ Pain that shows up at the start of a workout, then fades…
✔ Pain that comes back during cooldown or later that day
If so, you may be dealing with shin splints — a common overuse injury we see in runners and jumping athletes.
What Causes Shin Splints?
Shin splints often develop when the lower leg is overloaded too quickly, including:
• Sudden increases in running distance, intensity, or duration
• Running on hard or uneven surfaces
• Worn-out or inappropriate shoes (shock absorption matters!)
Early on, symptoms may ease during exercise. As the condition worsens, pain can persist during activity and last for hours or even days afterward.
⚠️ Important:
Some conditions can mimic shin splints, including:
• Stress fractures
• Exertional compartment syndrome
• Vascular conditions
That’s why proper evaluation matters.
How to Help Prevent Shin Splints
✔ Avoid sudden training changes
✔ Replace running shoes every 300–500 miles
✔ Use proper footwear or orthotics if needed
✔ Follow a structured strengthening and stretching program
How Physical Therapy Helps
At Advanced Orthopedic Physical Therapy, we help by:
✔ Identifying the true source of pain
✔ Prescribing targeted strengthening (like eccentric heel raises)
✔ Improving balance and lower-leg control
✔ Guiding a safe return-to-running program
👉 If shin pain is slowing you down, call 503-537-7070 to schedule a FREE injury screening and get answers before it becomes a bigger issue.

Want to build strength without lifting heavy? 💪 Blood Flow Restriction therapy allows you to gain muscle and improve strength using lighter weights — making it perfect for post-surgical rehab, joint pain, or anyone looking to level up their workout safely.

By strategically limiting blood flow during exercise, BFR helps stimulate muscle growth, improve endurance, and accelerate recovery — all while reducing stress on your joints.

Whether you're recovering from injury or pushing toward new fitness goals, BFR could be a game changer in your program.

📅 Ready to see if it’s right for you? Schedule your evaluation with **AOPT** today and let’s get you moving stronger and smarter!
