Town of Newburgh EMS crews had a great time at this year’s Community Day! Crews enjoyed live music from Hudson Blue, checked out the food trucks and vendors, and finished off the night with a great fireworks display.

Despite Mother Nature delaying the festivities from the original date, it was well worth the wait! Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Community Day another great event! 🎆🇺🇸🚑

Last night, members of Town of Newburgh EMS & PD were recognized by the Town of Newburgh Town Board for their role in the successful resuscitation of a cardiac arrest patient from this past May.

This call was a true example of the Chain of Survival, beginning with a bystander and Orange County 911, followed by the rapid response of Town of Newburgh Police and Town of Newburgh EMS. Thanks to the teamwork of everyone involved, the patient survived, was discharged from the hospital, and made a full recovery.

We are proud to recognize Assistant Chief/Paramedic Ryan Quinlan, Paramedic Matthew Weir, EMT Kyle Carpenter, EMT Calvin Wong, and EMT Morgan Snoop for their efforts that day.

Thank you to Supervisor Gil Piaquadio and the Town Board for recognizing our crew and their commitment to the community!

Town of Newburgh EMS recently had the opportunity to participate in a school bus extrication drill led by our friends at Coldenham Fire Department, alongside Town of Montgomery EMS.

Coldenham FD is uniquely positioned along the Town of Newburgh and Town of Montgomery line, protecting residents in both communities. That makes opportunities like this especially valuable. When a serious incident occurs, jurisdictional lines disappear and all of our agencies work side by side to get the job done.

The drill gave fire and EMS crews the opportunity to practice school bus extrication, patient access, treatment, and coordination during a complex rescue scenario!

With the month of July coming to an end, we would like to highlight 2nd Assistant Chief Rich Lenahan as our member spotlight! Here is what Rich would like his community to know about him:

"Began working with computers when they first came out, doing mainframe installations. After that, I became a Snap-on Tools franchise owner, which turned into a district manager position for Snap-on Tools on Long Island.

In 1994, I became a volunteer firefighter doing fire, rescue, and medical calls. This is where my medical career began. I became an EMT in 1998 and a paramedic in 2000. Worked for a commercial agency for years doing 911 calls and critical transport. During this time, I became an instructor in my aspects of EMS. If it has a letter, I probably teach it.

I volunteered at Monroe EMS for over 10 years, where I was captain of the agency, bringing many new EMTs into the field.

In 2015, the opportunity to become the Senior Instructor at NY Presbyterian Cornell Medical Center. I continued my teaching duties while working part-time on the road at several agencies.

A few years ago, I heard that Newburgh EMS was going to become ALS and needed paramedics. I was offered a position as 2nd Asst. Chief of Training. I was hesitant to give up my Senior Instructor position for an agency that had never done ALS before, but I decided to accept the position, which turned out to be a very good choice.

During my journey, I received my Associate in Paramedicine, a Bachelor's in Emergency Services and Healthcare Administration, and finally my Master's in Emergency Management.

I am still volunteering in the fire service after 30+ years and now work alongside some of the finest people I have ever met in the field of EMS. No matter what the time of day or night, there is always a warm smile and a caring heart waiting as you walk through the door.

This man has been many places. Done and seen many things people only read about. Most say that they could never do the job we do in the field of EMS, and for the most part, that is true. It takes a special breed of person to do this job, and I am sure glad that I found the best group of people to do it with!"
