We are committed to the universal elimination of physical and attitudinal barriers, as well as assisting individuals with disabilities to make the transition from system dependency to independence successfully. Over the past month, we've had the privilege of highlighting the incredible people, businesses, nonprofits, municipalities, schools, employers, and community organizations working every day to make the Hudson Valley more accessible and inclusive.

Real change doesn't happen because of one person or one organization. It happens when communities come together, remove barriers, create opportunities, and believe that everyone deserves to participate fully in community life.

As we reflect on the transformative impact of the ADA these past 36 years, we also acknowledge that more work remains. An accessible future doesn’t happen by accident.

We were proud to join the National Council on Independent Living’s rally at the Capitol in Washington, DC, to raise awareness around disability and access issues, and helped educate members of Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer’s and Senator Kirsten Gillibrad’s teams on the experiences of New Yorkers with disabilities around the state.

Whether it’s at the federal, state, local, community, or individual level, you can join the movement toward a barrier-free society--all it takes is a YES! The only path forward is together.

The Newburgh Free Library is committed to making those opportunities available to everyone through accessible entrances, assistive technology, large print and audiobooks, resources for people who are blind or have low vision, programs for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and home delivery services for people who are unable to visit the library.

Say YES to 36 years of progress!

Today, we celebrate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark legislation that transformed our nation by protecting the civil rights of people with disabilities and advancing equal access to employment, education, transportation, public spaces, and community life.

The ADA has opened doors, but our work is far from over. Together, we continue to advocate for communities where accessibility is expected, inclusion is embraced, and every person has the opportunity to live independently.

Happy 36th Anniversary to the ADA, and thank you to the advocates, allies, and changemakers who continue moving us forward. 👩‍🦽‍➡️🧑‍🦼‍➡️👨‍🦯‍➡️🚶‍♀️‍➡️

Music, history, and culture should be experiences everyone can enjoy. Bethel Woods Center for the Arts continues to invest in accessibility through accessible seating, transportation assistance, wheelchair-accessible shuttles, assistive listening devices, ASL interpretation, accessible parking, and a fully accessible museum experience.

Bethel Woods also celebrates Disability Pride Month by hosting Hello Inclusion: A Festival of Possibilities, bringing people of all abilities together through music, art, and community while showcasing the talents of artists with disabilities.

On March 12, 1990, disability rights activists gathered at the U.S. Capitol to demand action. In what became known as the Capitol Crawl, more than 60 people left their wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches and climbed the Capitol's 83 steps, demonstrating the barriers people with disabilities faced every day.

Among them was 8-year-old Jennifer Keelan-Chaffins. With cerebral palsy, she pulled herself up the steps, famously saying, "I'll take all night if I have to."

Just over four months later, on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law.

The Capitol Crawl reminds us that progress happens because people are willing to advocate, challenge barriers, and demand equal access for everyone. 💪📣♿

The Orange County Board of Elections helps ensure voters with disabilities can cast their ballots independently and privately through accessible voting options, including ballot marking devices at polling locations and accessible absentee ballots for voters with print disabilities. These resources help make voting more accessible for everyone.
