She looks Amazing! She’s definitely an inspiration! 💪🏾🏋🏾♂️👑
I want to start back lifting weights and making some lifestyle changes!
At 56, Ernestine Shepherd walked into a gym after spending most of her life avoiding exercise.
Years later, she was standing on a bodybuilding stage with a Guinness World Record. 🏋️♀️
It all started with something surprisingly ordinary.
Ernestine and her older sister, Mildred, went shopping for swimsuits and weren't happy with how they looked. Instead of simply complaining about it, the sisters decided to start exercising together.
They took aerobics classes, began lifting weights and eventually dreamed of becoming competitive bodybuilders.
Then Ernestine lost the person who had started the journey with her.
Mildred died suddenly from a brain aneurysm.
The loss hit Ernestine so hard that she stopped exercising altogether. She later said she became depressed and did almost nothing for a period of time.
But she hadn't forgotten the promise she and her sister had made.
Eventually, she returned to training.
In her early 70s, Ernestine began preparing seriously for bodybuilding competitions with former Mr. Universe Yohnnie Shambourger. Within months, she stepped onto a competitive stage. 💪
By 2010, Guinness World Records had recognized her as the world's oldest performing female bodybuilder.
Her routine became extraordinary.
At one point, she was running around 80 miles a week while training for races, lifting weights regularly and even completing marathons. 🏃♀️
But Ernestine has always said the story isn't really about having abs at an older age.
It is about when she started.
She wasn't an athlete at 20.
She wasn't a lifelong bodybuilder.
She began at 56.
And the dream she originally shared with her sister became something she carried forward for decades.
“Age is nothing but a number,” Ernestine has said.
If someone can discover an entirely new version of themselves at 56, what goal have you been telling yourself you're already too old to begin?
