Trauma is personal and subjective; what one person experiences as traumatic, another may process differently. Events such as witnessing a car accident, losing a beloved family pet, or experiencing serious illness within the family may be stressful for some adults, but can be experienced as traumatic by children. Children often have fewer coping skills, less control over their environment, and a different understanding of events than adults. Additionally, experiences such as bullying, emotional abuse, neglect, or social exclusion are increasingly recognized as potentially traumatic due to their lasting impact on a childโs emotional well-being, self-esteem, and sense of safety.
