Toxin injections, like Botox or Dysport, create freedom for my patients, literally and figuratively. A skillfully placed injection blocks the muscle contraction, treating the spasticity caused by central nervous system injuries, like stroke or spinal cord injury. An elbow extends, fingers open, making it easier to get an arm in a sleeve or exercise grip for holding a tube of mascara.

I’ve been interested in expanding my skillset to treat other types of muscle tightness, like dystonia. A well timed connection and a curiosity driven question last week, and at the end of this week, I’m enrolled in a workshop to learn how to perform Botox injections for dystonia.

The connection to meet my patients and the curiosity to meet their needs are truly a privilege.

Botox and other botulinum toxins are used to help relive spasticity - or tight muscles caused by damage to the central nervous system from conditions, such as stroke, MS, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury. I love performing these injections for my patients because it is so gratifying to see their pain decrease and their function increase!

🔍 New Way to Measure Body Fat: Relative Fat Mass (RFM)



What is RFM?

Relative Fat Mass is a simple, accurate method to estimate whole-body fat percentage using just height, waist circumference, and s*x. Unlike BMI, which can’t distinguish between muscle and fat, RFM specifically targets body fat—the key driver of obesity-related health risks.

The Formula:

- Adults: 64 - (20 × height/waist) + (12 × s*x)

- S*x = 0 for men, 1 for women

Why It Matters:

RFM outperforms BMI in estimating actual body fat percentage when compared to gold-standard imaging (DXA scan).

Obesity Cutoffs:

- Women: ≥40% indicates obesity

- Men: ≥30% indicates obesity

These thresholds are associated with increased all-cause mortality risk.

BMI does not accurately predict risk for lots of different populations, including people with disabilities and athletes. It was not developed and was never validated to make individual health decisions. AND RFM de-emphasizes the number on the scale!

Well an insurance company found yet another way to not pay physicians. Anthem’s parent company generated almost $6 BILLION (with a B) in profit last year. But yeah sure paying physicians for the time and care they provided to patients is going to break their bank.
