This month, donors and friends of Hoag gathered for a conversation with physicians from the Jeffrey M. Carlton Heart & Vascular Institute about the future of cardiovascular care and what it takes to bring increasingly advanced treatment closer to home.

The discussion highlighted a defining strength of Hoag’s approach: bringing specialists together to determine the best path forward for each patient. From complex heart surgery and advanced heart failure therapies to minimally invasive vascular procedures, this collaborative model is expanding treatment options for patients throughout Orange County.

When baby Teddy was born four weeks early and spent two weeks in the Hoag NICU, his mom, Sabrina Valdez, looked for meaningful ways to bond with him amidst all the wires, monitors, and physical barriers. She found that connection through reading and singing to him every day.

Now, over a year after Teddy’s discharge, Sabrina and her family recently visited our NICU team to give back! Through her initiative, Teddy’s Bookshelf, Sabrina donated custom bundles featuring a plush teddy bear and a book (including bilingual options) to help current NICU parents bond with their little ones and hold onto hope during their journey.

Sabrina shared that the Hoag NICU felt like family to her, reflecting on the compassionate care and support her family received.

Thank you, Sabrina, Teddy, and the Valdez family, for turning your journey into a source of comfort and encouragement for other families!

Transforming breast cancer detection this Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

Hoag is the first hospital in Orange County to offer the new Koning Vera 3D Breast CT technology, delivering high-precision imaging without compression for our patients.

“This new breast CT technology represents an exciting advancement in breast imaging,” says Dr. January Lopez, medical director of breast imaging at the Sue J. Gross Comprehensive Breast Center at Hoag.

Funded through Hoag Innovators the breast CT complements Hoag’s comprehensive breast imaging program, which includes 3D mammography, ultrasound, and MRI, allowing care teams to recommend the most appropriate screening or diagnostic approach based on each patient’s individual needs.

We were also honored to host visiting scholars David Bodne, MD and Roger Zhang, PhD from Koning Health, who shared expert insights about the technology with our care team. Both this technology and our visiting scholars program are made possible through philanthropic giving. Philanthropy empowers us to bring the future of healthcare directly to our community.

A huge thank you to the City of Huntington Beach and Team P.O.W.E.R.!

At this year’s HB Employee Chili Cook-Off, city staff and first responders came together to raise $1,000 for the Hoag Family Cancer Institute and lung cancer research.

Team P.O.W.E.R. selects a local nonprofit each year to benefit from their 50/50 drawing, and we are so grateful for their commitment to supporting Hoag's mission and the health of our community. Special thanks to City Manager Travis Hopkins for introducing us and highlighting this meaningful partnership!

Together, we’re driving progress in cancer care.
