Nobody rests at yellow. We wait for the back to go out, the cold to hit, the week we can’t get out of bed. Then we rest, because now we have to. That’s the red battery. Your physical health shouldn’t come last, or even second. It should come first.

Twenty minutes isn’t something you have to find. You already have it. It’s currently going to a feed you won’t remember by dinner. And your kid is watching which one you pick. Nobody ever got a lecture about exercise and started exercising. Plenty of kids started because the person they live with did.

Pay attention to when you say something nice to your kid this week.

Most of it will come right after they did something. Which teaches them that being worth something is a result. Try one that isn’t attached to anything. No test, no game, no trash can.

Just something true about who they are, on a Tuesday, for no reason.

If your kid has had a hard few years, that’s not a mark against them. It’s practice. The ones I worry about are the ones it all came easy for. No big issues, and parents who smoothed everything out in front of them. Because the first real wave still comes. Junior year, or freshman year, or somewhere in their mid-20s. And when it does, they’ve got nothing to meet it with.

You just did that to your own parent in under a minute, and nothing about them changed. Now think about what your kid does with you. Same exercise, running all day, and most of the time only one set of lenses is on. The good news is they can learn to switch. The faster news is that you just did.

You ask your son how his day was, you get one word, and you let it go because you don’t want to turn dinner into an interrogation. Look, there’s so much more behind the scenes going on for your son than what he leads on. Get him in. Once a month is enough to start.

That’s the version of the story a kid tells themselves on the drive over, and it’s the one that makes them shut down before anyone says hello. If it’s the family going in, nobody has to be the problem.

Nobody plans to be the parent googling therapists at midnight. It just works out that way, because you don’t go looking for help until something’s wrong. Your kid is fine right now. That’s the window. It’s a lot easier to teach them the tools before they need them than the week they do.

Our kids are always watching to see how we respond. To stress, to anxiety, to sadness, to mistakes, to asking for help. So let them see it. “Hey, I’m having a hard time. I’m feeling down. I’m feeling stressed. But it’s okay, and here are some of the tools I’m using.” Having mental health struggles is part of being human. They learn that from watching you.
