The hardest leadership decision I ever made wasn’t firing someone too soon.
It was waiting too long and continually pouring into someone who wasn’t changing.
I kept telling myself I was being merciful and helpful.
I convinced myself that giving them more time would eventually lead to the change I wanted to see.
But sometimes, continuing to pour into someone isn’t helping them—it’s delaying a necessary decision.
Leadership means knowing when patience becomes avoidance.

Most people build a business to fund the life they want.
But for years, I had it completely backwards.
The business became the center of everything, and revenue became the scoreboard.
My family, my health, my faith, and my emotional well-being were things I told myself I’d get to later.
Eventually, you have to ask whether the business is serving your life or your life is serving the business.
The goal is to build a life worth living—and a business that supports it.

You told your kid you’d be at the game, and you meant it when you said it.
Then 4 PM comes, you’re still putting out fires, and you watch the clock from your desk.
You tell yourself, “They’ll understand.”
But they may be learning something else: not to expect you to be there.
I built Pacific Shores over 25 years, and I’ve had to confront what that kind of commitment can cost.
Because being successful at work doesn’t mean much if you’re missing the moments that matter most at home.

Most people in recovery are taught to avoid their triggers.
But what if triggers aren’t meant to trap you?
What if they can become opportunities for growth and transformation?
For years, the traditional approach has been to stay away from the people, places, and things connected to addiction.
But recovery can also mean learning to understand what your triggers are trying to reveal.
Sometimes, the thing you want to run from is the very thing you need to learn how to face.

If you’re the family member of someone in active addiction, I’m talking to you right now—not them.
I’ve sat across from hundreds and hundreds of families over the last 25 years.
The ones who learned to smell it on someone’s breath.
The ones who learned to watch every behavior, cover every problem, and anticipate what might happen next.
You may have gotten really good at managing the addiction.
And that may be where the problem begins.

I hear this from a lot of loved ones: “Just stop.”
Great plan. But what’s step two?
I’ve watched people keep hearing those words and start feeling like a failure because they can’t do something that sounds so simple.
The truth is, people can stop for a weekend, a week, even a month.
The harder part is understanding what keeps bringing them back.
Recovery isn’t just about stopping. It’s about learning how to live differently afterward.

72 hours. That’s a number nobody in early recovery forgets.
It’s when your body can begin to feel like it’s finally giving itself back to you.
The shaking starts to calm down, and your temperature may stop swinging between freezing and burning up.
Your heart rate, which has been running nonstop, can begin to settle.
These physical changes are easy to overlook, but they can be an important part of the early recovery process.
Sometimes, healing starts with simply noticing what your body has been going through.

Three signs your body may already be asking you to quit.
Morning nausea that has nothing to do with what you ate.
Eight hours of sleep, but you wake up just as tired.
That 3 PM crash you keep blaming on work, caffeine, or a bad night’s sleep.
Notice that none of these are feelings.
That’s the part I see so many people miss.
