Over 40% Of Infection-Related Deaths In Americas Tied To Antimicrobial Resistance In 2019, Study Indicates.

Healio (8/8, Feller, Stulpin) reported, “More than two out of every five infection-related deaths in the Americas in 2019 were associated with bacterial antimicrobial resistance, according to a...study.” Results indicate that “deaths attributable to antimicrobial resistance in the 35 countries that make up the Americas accounted for more than 11% of the total global deaths attributable to resistant infections.” Researchers “also identified the countries with the highest and lowest rates of death associated with AMR, and the pathogens most commonly responsible.” The findings were published in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas.

Reports of Severe Skin Infections in France Transmitted During S*x Mostly Between Gay Men:

A recently published study from France highlights 13 severe dermatophyte infections (ringworm, tinea) caused by T. mentagrophytes, genotype VII (TMVII). The infections occurred primarily among men who have s*x with men, were likely transmitted during s*x and could be spreading locally in Europe; to date, TMVII infections have not been reported in the U.S. ID clinicians should be aware that severe and antifungal-resistant dermatophyte infections are an emerging public health concern. Health care providers who identify unusual cases or clusters of dermatophyte infections should contact their state or local public health department for assistance with testing

Over half the world will be overweight or obese by 2035 without significant action

Reuters (3/2, Rigby) says that “more than half of the world’s population will” have overweight or obesity “by 2035 without significant action, according to a new report.” In addition, the World Obesity Atlas 2023 “found that childhood obesity could more than double from 2020 levels, to 208 million boys and 175 million girls by 2035.” The report (PDF) from the World Obesity Federation showed “the cost to society is significant as a result of the health conditions linked to” having “overweight, the federation said: more than $4 trillion annually by 2035, or 3% of global GDP.”

MONKEY POX Update:
First, no need to panic and no one has been hospitalized. Think of it like Chicken Pox. The only way we can test is if you have a pox lesion to send for PCR. Vaccine is in VERY limited supply, but they are making it. Stay tuned.

Probable Monkeypox Virus Case in Orange County
June 29, 2022

Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) has been notified of its first probable monkeypox virus case. Probable cases are those who test positive for orthopoxvirus DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay. Probable cases will be sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for monkeypox virus confirmation. Probable cases are managed as monkeypox virus cases while awaiting laboratory confirmation.

The case met epidemiologic criteria, specifically, men who have s*x with men (MSM). The case did have prodrome but has not required hospitalization for his illness. We are currently investigating to identify any contacts and additional cases.

The 2022 monkeypox outbreak continues to evolve, with over 4,000 cases identified in previously non-endemic countries, and 244 cases (as of 6/27/22) in 27 states in the US. In Southern California, 28 cases have been reported by Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (as of 6/29/22) and 4 cases in San Diego County (as of 6/24/22).
