Hi 👋🏼 from your resident therapist with ADHD!

Did you know ADHD is often misdiagnosed as anxiety in women? According to the NIH, about 75% of women with ADHD were misdiagnosed before getting their ADHD diagnoses. I am one of those 75%.

For me, my anxiety often stemmed from what I call the ADHD freeze. Last night I had a lot of laundry to be put away and instead of “just doing it,” my brain got stuck in a loop of how to even begin, leading me to an anxious freeze. After a lifetime of this internal pattern, my brain learned to not trust itself, leading to debilitating, chronic anxiety. So while yes, I do have anxiety, the ROOT problem was 20+ years of undiagnosed ADHD. Through the correct diagnosis, therapy, and yes, medication, I have come a long way in relearning to trust myself, but we are only human. And last night was a very ADHD human moment.

👇Let me know in the comments if you want to learn more about why this is a common misdiagnosis in women (and also in men!)

My client’s are probably sick of hearing me say this, but it’s true:

✅More than one thing can be true at the same time ✅

Something I hear a lot is, “yes this sucks, but it could be worse” or “others have it worse.”

Yes that is probably true. But instead of that making you feel better, what you are actually doing is dismissing your own experiences.

❣️Just because others might have had it worse, does not make your own experiences or emotions any less true❣️

Dismissing our own experiences and emotions will always lead to things like burnout, generalized anxiety, anger, low stress tolerance etc.

There is always duality in life.

🔥You can hold the pain of others without dismissing your own🔥

Today I met Eeyore.

When I told him I help kids and teens understand their feelings, especially sadness, he pulled me aside and hugged me. For a long time. No words. No fixing. Just presence.

Eeyore reminds us:
You can feel sad and still be worthy of love.
You can move slowly and still matter.
You don’t have to pretend to be okay to belong.

For every kid who feels like an Eeyore in a world that celebrates Tiggers — you are not broken.
You are human. And you are enough. 🤍

If you can relate to any of these, the way to help yourself isn’t more discipline, ✨it’s more care.✨

Burnout is not a motivation problem, it’s a capacity problem.

When you have been under continuous demand (as most of us are this time of year), these signs are a protective response from our nervous systems; doing their best to cope.

Grace and self-compassion are not indulgent.
THEY ARE REGULATING.

✨Reducing expectations, slowing your pace, and responding with kindness, lowers physiological stress, restores emotional regulation, and increases capacity over time.✨

Healing doesn’t come from pushing harder.
✨It comes from listening sooner.✨
