Providing a meal for the families (and staff) staying at SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House is a wonderful way to care for those who are going through a difficult part of life’s journey. By providing a lunch or dinner, you (your office, your Sunday School class, your church, your team, your department, your club, your friends, your family, your restaurant, etc.) make life better for those who are staying with their loved ones. Meals that are brought to our House are shared by everyone there and keep people from having to leave to go out to eat. They also help our families to save money by not having to go and purchase a meal somewhere else.

Any kind of meal is appreciated, including orders from local area restaurants, but homemade meals are the best! Food is prepared and then brought up to SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House (by noon for lunches, by 4:30pm for dinners) where it is left in the kitchen for families to help themselves. Leftovers are packaged up and placed in the family refrigerator to be eaten later as desired.

You or your group can sign up in two ways:

Call the Hospice House at 252-777-4201 to find an available day to bring a meal.

Go online at Meal Train to sign up for a day to bring a meal. You will need to create an account to sign up online, but once you have done so you can browse through our calendar and choose a date/meal that works well for you.

This Meal Train is for meals for the families of patients staying at SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House and also for staff. Kay Coole was our guest speaker Wednesday morning. Kay is the Executive Director of the SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House.

The SECU Crystal Coast Hospice House is a non-profit organization that provides a wonderful inpatient experience for residents of the Crystal Coast including Carteret, Craven, Jones, Onslow, and Pamlico Counties. The facility provides a warm and supportive environment for terminally ill hospice patients who desire inpatient care and for their loved ones who wish to be by their side.

Their current goals and objectives are to raise community awareness about the hospice house; educate the public and referring agencies about hospice care; ensure that the facility provides a peaceful, caring and beautiful setting for all future patients and families; and to seek necessary funding to fulfill our mission to serve the residents of the Crystal Coast.

Dick Brvenik, who is on our board of directors, has had his share of heart struggles. We are relieved and thankful that he is recovering well from his heart transplant and that our local hospital, Carteret Health Care has the expertise to keep him on his road to recovery!

When someone who spent more than 8 years leading our hospital becomes a patient — and leaves with this to say — it speaks volumes. 💙

Dick served as our CEO, championing quality patient care every single day. Recently, he became a patient himself after experiencing a serious cardiac emergency. After Dr. David Jessup recognized Dick's symptoms and quickly directed him to our Emergency Department, our exceptional emergency and cardiology teams sprang into action. They successfully performed an advanced, time-critical procedure — placing an Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump to sustain his heart. This life-saving intervention stabilized Dick enough to allow for an emergency airlift to Duke University Hospital . There he received a heart transplant — a remarkable and life-changing procedure — followed by a nearly two-month inpatient stay as he began his recovery.

Today, Dick is already working hard in cardiac rehab, and his words remind us every day why we are dedicated to healthcare. We are so grateful you are on the road to recovery, Dick — and we hope to see you back on the tennis courts soon! 🎾
