September is Su***de Prevention Month, and here in the Northeast Kingdom, that means more than awareness—it means action.

QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) training gives everyday people the skills to recognize warning signs and connect someone in crisis to help. This year, two of our own, Terri Lavely and Ruth Marquette, became certified QPR Master Trainers, meaning even more community members can be trained across the NEK.

Real impact is already happening; in FY 26, Terri and Ruth held 15 training courses with 247 individuals completing QPR. In August, Terri and Ruth trained 88 student leaders at Vermont State University. As one participant shared, "I was struggling with my own mental health when I attended QPR...I am thankful for what you do."

Sessions are available online or in person for individuals and organizations across the NEK. Read the full story and learn how you can get involved: https://nkhs.org/blog/building-a-safety-net-how-qpr-training-is-changing-the-conversation-around-mental-health-in-the-nek

NKHS and NVRH are teaming up on a creative new campaign that brings cancer screening awareness and mental health support to bar and restaurant tables across the Northeast Kingdom. While the messages are different, the goal is the same: mind and body health go hand in hand.

September is Su***de Prevention and Awareness Month, and the NKHS coasters raise awareness of the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline, while the NVRH coasters remind bar and restaurant patrons about cancer screenings.

“This collaboration creates a meaningful connection between physical and mental health by pairing NVRH's cancer prevention and screening initiatives with NKHS's crisis continuum and mental health awareness efforts,” said Diana Gibbs, NVRH VP of Community Health Improvement. “Together, we can deliver a more holistic wellness message that emphasizes the importance of both mind and body health.”
