Lately, I’ve been seeing so many posts like:

“Mental health careers are the future ✨”
“Studying art therapy abroad is so promising ✨”

…and every time, I just quietly smile (🙂)

This is not meant to discourage anyone

I simply wanted to share a more realistic glimpse into the field
for those who are interested in art therapy and expressive therapies.

Of course,
this is only based on my personal experience and doesn’t represent every art therapist’s journey!

And honestly,
I still truly love this work.

Fellow therapists probably understand this kind of reality check 😆
And there’s still so much more to say ~
feel free to share your own experiences in the comments!

Sometimes in conflict,
one person is already starting to not want to fight anymore(relatively between the two).

But one more provocation or insult
can pull them right back into the emotional storm again.

Through mental health work, I learned that conflict intervention is not always about repeatedly telling both people to calm down.
Sometimes, it’s about creating a little distance first.

At times, asking the person who seems more overwhelmed or cornered in the conflict to help with a small task
can gently shift the focus
and help both people move away from the emotional storm.

As a new non-profit organization, Table Expressive Therapies, Inc. first tabling event was a success! Thank you National Chengchi University (NCCU) Alumni Association for your support and collaborating with us!

When life feels heavy, where can you turn for support in Boston?

In collaboration with the 2026 NCCU Alumni Association and Newton Taiwan Day, a group of outstanding Boston-area therapists and Table Expressive Therapies came together to share mental health resources, practical tips, and information on children’s and adolescents’ mental wellness with the Greater Boston community.

We hope to help lighten the weight on your heart and make it easier to know where to seek support when you need it. In addition to mental health resource sharing, the event also offered interactive activities where participants can practice emotional expression and self-awareness together.

The mission of Table Expressive Therapies is to promote healing and well-being through expressive arts-based and non-traditional therapeutic practices. We seek to raise awareness of expressive therapies and utilize diverse artistic modalities to support self-care and overall wellness among Asian and new immigrant communities.

Through an engaging and supportive environment, we provide opportunities for community members to explore creative outlets to enhance mental, emotional, and physical health.

We look forward to coming back next year at Newton Taiwan Day 2027!

Hi everyone! Do you ever find yourself caring deeply about certain issues in everyday life, but not quite knowing how to speak up, or even wondering whether you can make a difference?
Today, I’d like to share some small acts of advocacy I practice in my everyday life. These actions may not bring immediate or visible change, but they are like seeds, quietly taking root and growing over time.
What are some ways you practice advocacy in your daily life? Feel free to share in the comments!

Hi everyone! People often say, “This is my OCD,” but clinical Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is more than just a preference for neatness. It is a painful and exhausting vicious cycle.

Common Misconceptions: This is NOT OCD
* Simply liking symmetry or being a perfectionist.
* Finding cleanliness therapeutic or enjoyable.
The Key Difference: Even if things aren’t perfect, you can still let it go. You still have the “power to choose.”

Clinical Features of OCD
* Obsessions (O): Persistent, intrusive, and unstoppable thoughts. (e.g., “What if I’m not clean enough and someone dies because of me?”)
* Urge: An overwhelming feeling that if you don’t act immediately, your anxiety will explode.
* Compulsions (C): Repetitive, ritualistic behaviors. (e.g., “I must wash my hands ten times or check the stove again and again to feel safe.”)

How the Cycle Works:
Obsessions (O) =》Anxiety urge =〉Compulsions (C) =》Temporary Relief =〉Thoughts Return

Why is it so hard to stop?
Because the “temporary relief” reinforces the brain’s belief that the behavior is effective. This strengthens the dependency, creating a vicious cycle that is incredibly difficult to break.
OCD is not a personality trait; it is a mental health disorder driven by anxiety.

Feels like spring is finally here…

Maybe right you your work has been busy, life is shifting, or you’re trying to find some balance.

Even as therapists, we have moments of feeling overwhelmed

(yes… lots of inner dialogues

Today I want to share a piece I created, along with some reflections from work

I think many of us know this feeling—

after work, the mind doesn’t stop:

“Did I say something wrong?”

“Did that response affect my client?”

Endless self-checking…Worrying about not doing enough, questioning our competence, or feeling too responsible…

But when I zoom out, I see the relationship we’ve been building, and the time we’ve walked through together.

Clients are often more resilient than I expect.

We learn that therapy is not one-sided,

but a shared process—

yet sometimes we understand it cognitively,

but haven’t fully felt it.

Maybe we’re hard on ourselves because we care, and that makes us afraid of “messing up.”

But like art creation, when we fear mistakes, our lines become tight and rigid. The authentic piece often happens alongside imperfection, through trial, friction, and process.

Thank you for reading this far👀I’d love to hear your thoughts:
❓In a meaningful relationship, what tends to matter more for you?

Today, I want to share a small observation
about language and culture.
Some English expressions aren’t meant to be taken literally ~ they’re actually a kind of “social language.”

Self-criticism is often a survival strategy, it's not your fault!

If mistakes were shamed growing up, the Threat system becomes overactive.
The brain could have learned: “Criticize yourself first. It’s safer.”

How to practice being self compassionate:

• Soothing touch activates the parasympathetic system.
• Compassionate imagery inputs safety into the nervous system.

Self-compassion is kind of like physical therapy for the brain.

Lunar New Year Papercutting 🧧✂️🌺

This Lunar New Year, have you tried papercutting? The organization I work in hosted a papercutting event to celebrate Lunar New Year together with the community!

Many Asian and new immigrant families attended with their children, working together to create their own LNY papercutting, welcoming the new year in a joyful atmosphere!

This event guided parents and children in experiencing the traditional art of paper cutting together, while learning about common Lunar New Year symbols such as the “Fu” character, lanterns, zodiac animals, and floral designs.

Through hands-on cutting and creative activity, children can develop focus and creativity while families enjoy meaningful time together. Finished artworks can be taken home for decoration, adding festive cheer and blessings to the New Year.

Through activities like this, we hope to support Asian and new immigrant families in developing healthy lifestyle habits and promoting overall physical and mental well-being in an effort to prevent problem gambling.

In everyday life, we often hear people say things like “Don’t make it ideological” or “That’s too ideological,” as if ideology were simply a source of bias or division. But is ideology really just a negative label?

Today, I’d like to talk about the topic of “ideology” and also hear your thoughts.
