When severe bone-on-bone arthritis in his left knee made every step painful, Ross knew it was time to seek help. John Nichols’ life changed in an instant after a motorcycle crash left him with severe injuries, including a spinal cord injury that caused paralysis from his ribs down. In the early days, even the smallest progress felt monumental — like the first time he could wiggle a toe.

After months of rehabilitation, John found his way to MercyOne, where he began working with a team that helped him push beyond what he thought was possible.

Four years after his accident, he crossed the finish line of his first Grand Blue Mile with his MercyOne physical therapist by his side. Today, more than seven years into recovery, he’s still getting “1% better every day,” improving his race time and taking steps on his own.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the team at MercyOne,” John says. “They’re helping me rebuild my life.”
