This is a great craft to do, especially with our artistic clients! Make sure to have a visual model as well as step by step instructions on how to assemble to support success. Consider different designs with fewer or more steps to grade the activity to be the “just right match!”

When setting this activity up for your clients, consider the following principles in your selection of the just right straw:

🐛Smaller straw, higher lip closure demands; Larger straw, lower lip closure demands.

🐛Longer straw, higher breath control demands; Shorter straw, lower breath control demands.

Fine Motor Activity Highlight! 🐛

Here is a little blast from the past, the game of Cootie!

Cootie is a fun and simple game that also targets many different functional skills:
🐛 Bilateral motor coordination: Can you hold the body of the bug still while adding other body parts?
🐛 Grasp patterns- Can you shift your grasp patterns to accommodate for the different sizes of the pieces?
🐛 In hand manipulation- Can you move pieces around in your hand to align them correctly to the holes?
🐛 Tactile discrimination- Can you successfully place the piece into the body while relying on touch (and vision!) to be successful?
🐛 Visual perception- Can you match the image on the spinner to the correct body parts?

Some ways to grade the activity up:
🐛 Hand strengthening- Can you pull the pieces out of putty or playdough?
🐛 Tactile discrimination- Can you find/ feel and pull the pieces out of different tactile bins?
🐛 Pre-writing skills- Can you draw or write about your new bug friend?
