The film is Steel Magnolias. Nobody in that crowd knows the real story behind it.
The story starts years earlier, in a small town called Natchitoches, Louisiana. A young man named Robert Harling has a little sister named Susan.
Susan is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 12. She grows up, falls in love, and gets married.
Doctors warn her for years that a pregnancy could destroy her body. Susan wants a child anyway, and in 1983, she gives birth to a baby boy.
Here's what makes it worse. Soon after the birth, her kidneys start failing. Her own mother donates one of hers in an emergency transplant, hoping to save her daughter's life.
It isn't enough. Susan dies in 1985, during a follow-up surgery. She is 33 years old.
Her son is only two. Robert Harling watches his nephew grow up with almost no memory of the woman who fought so hard to have him.
A friend tells Harling to write the story down, just to get it out of his head. He has never written a play before.
It takes him 10 days. He sets it in a small-town beauty salon, the kind of place where his mother and her friends used to gather and gossip and hold each other up.
He names the play Steel Magnolias. It opens off-Broadway in 1987 and runs for almost three years, packing houses night after night.
Producer Ray Stark buys the film rights before the play even finishes its run. Director Herbert Ross signs on to bring it to the screen.
Casting the lead is hard. Meg Ryan is originally attached but leaves to make When Harry Met Sally instead. Winona Ryder and Laura Dern are considered too.
Then an unknown 23-year-old actress named Julia Roberts reads for the part. She gets it, and she becomes Shelby, the character built directly from Susan's own life.
Sally Field plays Shelby's mother, M'Lynn, a role shaped by Harling's real mother, the same woman who once gave up a kidney trying to save her daughter.
Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis round out the cast. Four of these six leading women are already Oscar winners by the time filming begins.
The movie opens on November 15, 1989, made for a budget of 15 million dollars. It goes on to earn 96.8 million dollars worldwide.
Julia Roberts earns the film's only Oscar nomination, for playing a young woman who chose motherhood knowing it might kill her. That woman was real, and her name was Susan.
Millions of people have quoted this movie, cried at this movie, and called it their comfort watch, without ever knowing Shelby Eatenton actually lived and actually died at 33, leaving behind a two-year-old son and a brother who couldn't let her be forgotten.
Sometimes the softest, funniest stories come from the hardest places. A grieving man sat down for 10 days so his nephew would someday know his mother, and instead, he gave the whole world a reason to remember her too.
