Hearing the same question multiple times can be frustrating—but for someone living with dementia, each question may feel like the first time they're asking it.

Responding with patience, reassurance, and kindness can help reduce anxiety for everyone involved.

Small moments of compassion often have the greatest impact.

Be like Ted.

Senior living is about way more than units.

It’s way more than bingo, although don’t get it twisted, those bingo games can get pretty rowdy. 😉

And it’s certainly more than “a place to retire.”

Sometimes, apparently, it’s roadside assistance.

Today, our neighbor Hannah sent us this picture and a message asking if we could help identify the kind man who stopped what he was doing, in this Kansas heat no less, to help them get a stubborn tire off their car.

We knew exactly who he was.

Ted Mueller.

Hannah told us they’ve been going through it lately, and that this simple act of kindness gave them “lots of hope again.”

That’ll preach.

Because Ted had his own plans today. His own to do list. His own places to be. But somebody needed help.

So Ted stopped.

And maybe that’s the part of senior living we don’t talk about enough.

Our residents don’t leave their sense of community behind when they move here. They bring it with them. Decades of being the neighbor who shows up, the person who lends a hand, the one who knows sometimes the most important thing on your to do list is the thing that wasn’t on it at all.

They bring that spirit into our halls, into the Newton community, and into every little interaction that reminds us community isn’t really a “place.”

It’s people.

Ted probably thought he was just helping with a tire.

May God give Ted someone willing to stop for him if he ever finds himself needing a hand somewhere out in the world.

But if he’s right here at home?

We’d like to believe there would be plenty.

Be like Ted. 💙

A dementia diagnosis doesn't change someone's need for love, friendship, and belonging.

Simple moments—a shared meal, listening to favorite music, looking through family photos, or enjoying time together—can continue to bring joy and connection.

Meaningful relationships remain an important part of quality of life, no matter where someone is on their journey.

Maybe the next chapter isn’t so much about what you give up, but what you make room for.

Good people. Good leadership. A little less to worry about. A lot more life to live.

And soft serve. Definitely make room for the soft serve. 😂🍦
