Picky eating isnât always about being stubborn or refusing to try new foods. For many children, itâs one way an overwhelmed nervous system shows up.
Food texture, smell, temperature, appearance, and even the sound food makes when chewing are all sensory experiences. When a childâs nervous system is overwhelmed, everyday meals can feel stressful instead of enjoyable. Thatâs why picky eating is often seen alongside sensory sensitivities, meltdowns, and sensory-seeking or sensory-avoiding behaviors. Supporting nervous system regulation is key.
We all want our kiddos to enjoy mealtimes without stress, and supporting a healthy, regulated nervous system may be one important piece of that journey.
