Back to school brings a lot of changes for families. There are new routines, environments, friendships, and relationships. About 90% of children who are sexually abused know their abuser. That's why being a safe adult matters. It's a year-round responsibility, but the start of the school year is a great moment to revisit what it means.

Remind youth: No matter who the person is or where it happens — if someone makes them feel uncomfortable, or does something unsafe, it's okay to talk to you about it. Open, honest conversations about online safety are one of the best ways to prevent abuse.

Stay engaged. Know what games they're playing, what apps they're using, and who they're talking to.

Don't assume. Just because a game or an app is popular doesn't mean it's always safe — and don't assume youth will tell you everything on their own. Stay curious, keep talking, and stay involved in what they're doing online.

The Take it Down Act requires covered platforms to:

(1) give people a way to request the removal of intimate photos or videos shared online without their consent; and

(2) remove the intimate photos or videos, and duplicates, within 48 hours of a valid request.

The Take It Down Act covers intimate real images, and images that were digitally created or altered using software, an app, or artificial intelligence.

The FTC enforces compliance by covered platforms. If a covered platform violates the Take It Down Act, report it to the FTC.

The requires covered platforms to give victims a way to quickly remove intimate images and videos shared without their consent—and the platforms must do so within 48 hours of a valid request. The FTC collects reports about violations of the law at TakeItDown.ftc.gov

Many adults warn children about “stranger danger,” but the truth is that most child sexual abuse is committed by someone the child already knows—and sometimes by someone they love and trust.

It’s important to teach children that no matter who the person is, if anyone acts in an unsafe way or ignores their boundaries, they should tell a safe adult right away.
