GLP-1 Weight Loss Breakthrough for Pets

Hello everyone. I’m Dr. Sam Speron, a board-certified plastic surgeon in The Chicago area. Today I want to share an interesting development in medical science that is making headlines, and it involves weight loss treatments for pets. Researchers are now studying a new implant that delivers a GLP-1 medication, a type of drug many people recognize from its success in human weight management and metabolic health.

This experimental implant is designed to provide a steady release of medication for up to six months after a single placement during a routine veterinary visit. The goal is to help overweight cats improve insulin sensitivity, reduce body fat, and support better overall metabolic health without requiring constant injections or major changes to daily feeding routines.

One of the reasons scientists are interested in this approach is because obesity in pets has become increasingly common. Just like in humans, excess weight in cats and dogs can lead to diabetes, heart issues, and reduced lifespan. By delivering medication continuously, the implant may help regulate appetite and metabolism in a more stable and controlled way.

Researchers are currently studying the safety and effectiveness of this treatment in overweight cats, and the results will guide future studies in dogs as well. The early research is promising, but it is still in the experimental phase and scientists will continue to evaluate how well it works and how safe it is over time.

I always find it fascinating to see how advances in medicine can impact not only people but the animals we care about as well. Innovations like this show how quickly science continues to evolve in the field of metabolic health.

This is one of the most common cosmetic surgery misunderstandings.

Liposuction focuses on removing localized areas of unwanted fat and improving contour.

A tummy tuck can address excess abdominal skin and may also repair separated abdominal muscles when appropriate.

That means choosing between them is not simply about how much fat you want removed. Skin quality, muscle anatomy, body shape, previous pregnancies, weight changes, and your goals all matter.

At Dr. Speron Plastic Surgery, SC, the right procedure starts with understanding the problem you actually want to solve.

One restores. One replenishes. And sometimes the best answer is neither until your anatomy and goals are carefully evaluated.

Dermal fillers can help address areas of lost volume and facial contour, while facelift surgery is designed to address deeper structural aging and skin laxity.

The important question is not which treatment is more popular.

It is which approach makes sense for your face.

At Dr. Speron Plastic Surgery, SC, facial rejuvenation should look personal, balanced, and natural rather than like you are trying to become somebody else.

Because refreshed beats overdone every time.

Old Food Pyramid vs. The New Food Pyramid – What Changed?

Today I want to talk about something interesting in the world of health and nutrition, the new food pyramid that looks very different from the one many of us grew up with. For decades the traditional pyramid placed grains like bread, rice, and pasta at the bottom as the largest portion of our daily diet.

In the older version of the pyramid, people were encouraged to eat large amounts of grains every day, followed by fruits and vegetables, then moderate portions of dairy and meat. Fats and sweets were placed at the very top, meaning they were supposed to be eaten only sparingly. That model shaped how many Americans thought about nutrition for years.

The new pyramid takes a very different approach. Instead of grains forming the base of the diet, foods like protein, healthy fats, dairy, fruits, and vegetables are now emphasized as the largest portions. Grains are moved much lower on the pyramid, meaning they are no longer considered the primary foundation of everyday nutrition.

Another major shift involves protein and fats. Protein intake recommendations are higher than in the past, reflecting the growing understanding of its importance for muscle health, metabolism, and long term wellness. Healthy fats are also viewed differently today — rather than avoiding them, the focus is now on consuming fats that come from whole food sources.

The most important takeaway is that real, whole foods and balanced nutrition play a powerful role in overall health, skin quality, and aging. When patients focus on nutrient rich foods, adequate protein, and healthy lifestyle habits, it supports not only their general wellness but also how their body heals and maintains healthy tissue over time.

The impossible may be becoming possible in the fight against advanced lung cancer!

A landmark study found that carefully selected patients whose cancer remained confined to severely damaged lungs experienced encouraging survival after lung transplantation.

It is a powerful reminder that medical innovation often begins by challenging what was once considered too risky or unrealistic.

At Dr. Speron Plastic Surgery, SC, we celebrate the physicians, researchers, and patients helping medicine move beyond yesterday’s limits.

Daxxify vs. Botox – What You Need to Know

Hello everyone. I’m Dr. Sam Speron, a board-certified plastic surgeon in The Chicago area. Today I want to talk about a question many patients are asking lately, how does Daxxify compare to Botox?

Botox has been the gold standard in neuromodulators for decades, and now Daxxify is a newer option that has been getting a lot of attention.

Daxxify is a type of botulinum toxin injection similar to Botox, but it uses a different stabilization technology. Instead of traditional stabilizing proteins, it uses a peptide-based system that gives the product a slightly different formulation. This difference in chemistry can influence how the product behaves once it is injected.

One of the biggest reasons patients are curious about Daxxify is how long it may last. Many patients see Botox results for around three to four months, while some Daxxify treatments may last longer for certain individuals. Longevity can vary from person to person, but the idea of fewer treatment visits during the year is something many patients find appealing.

Botox, however, continues to be extremely reliable and well understood after decades of successful use. With more than 26 years in private practice, I focus on choosing the right treatment for each person’s anatomy and goals so the result looks smooth, natural, and balanced.

Both treatments can produce beautiful results when used thoughtfully and precisely. The most important factor is proper evaluation and technique so that the treatment enhances your natural appearance rather than changing it.

These Are the Only Proven Ways to Boost Collagen

Hello everyone. I’m Dr. Sam Speron, a board-certified plastic surgeon in The Chicago area. One of the most common questions I hear from patients is how can I boost collagen naturally?

Collagen is the structural protein that keeps your skin firm, smooth, and youthful, but starting in our twenties our natural collagen production slowly begins to decline.

The first proven way to support collagen is by protecting the collagen you already have. Sun exposure is one of the biggest causes of collagen breakdown, which is why consistent sun protection and good daily skincare habits are so important. When you protect your skin from unnecessary damage, you help preserve the collagen framework that keeps skin looking tight and healthy.

Another powerful way to stimulate collagen is through ingredients that encourage your skin to renew itself. Vitamin A based products and certain active skincare ingredients help your skin increase its natural cell turnover, which supports new collagen formation over time. Patients often expect results overnight, but collagen rebuilding is gradual and requires consistency.

Lifestyle also plays a major role in collagen health — what you eat, how you sleep, and how you manage stress all influence how well your skin maintains its strength and elasticity. Diets rich in healthy fats, antioxidants, and proteins give your body the building blocks it needs to produce strong collagen fibers.

I have seen firsthand that the best results always come from combining good skincare, healthy habits, and the right professional guidance for your skin. When you take care of collagen early, your skin will thank you for many years to come.
