The language of autistics is often called “inflexible “. For 26 years, I focused on teaching a child “I want____.” While it IS important to have a child communicate their needs and wants, there is SO MUCH MORE to communicate than that! How can we expect a person to have a conversation when they have ONLY the ability to communicate what they want to eat, drink or play???!!!! Talk about inflexible language! Let’s model things such as “that’s awesome” or “so scary” and gestalts that communicate transitions and protests other than “no”. Then, as your child picks op language, they will have a variety of ideas to communicate and that’s called “flexible” language!

I no longer prompt a child with, “say____”. Instead, I read their body language, read facial expressions and use the context of what’s going on. I also listen to the intonation of unintelligible speech or do the detective work when I’m not sure what a gestalt means. Then I offer models from the child’s perspective. Many of my clients love to play with the same toys, be it letters and numbers, dinosaurs, cars and trucks , etc. again and again. It’s amazing to see their fascination with these special interests - the familiarity and routine can be regulating, which is great! And all play is valid, so it’s all good! What I often provide in my sessions is another item that allows different ways of playing with familiar toys. Think “cooking” letters, hiding them in a sensory box filled with rice or sand or sliding those letters down a slide! We’ve even put dinosaurs in a salad spinner (!) and checked out our dinos using the doctor kit. Doing this allows me to explore and model new language as I connect with the child using their major interest! I might focus on mitigation: “it’s A’s turn, it’s E’s turn” as I push them on a swing. Or I can model a new stage one gestalt such as, “where are you????” as we search for the T-Rex in a game of hide and seek! Enjoy the connection and provide new language models as you play with a child’s high interest toys by adding new ways to play. Then watch what can happen in a natural, new way!
