I no longer write goals about play because all play is ok and it develops as cognition and language develop! When I allow a child to lead play, I build connection, relationship and trust. And THATS when the magic can happen.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆?
It's not to change who a child is. For Autistic children, meaningful therapy begins with understanding and respecting their unique ways of experiencing the world. The goal isn't to make a child appear "less Autistic", it's to support their development, strengthen relationships, and help them participate in everyday life in ways that are authentic to them.

Last week I had the opportunity to speak on how to identify and support a gestalt language processor at the Indiana First Steps state conference. It is crucial to me that more and more people -parents, therapists, physicians, etc.- know about this natural second type of language development that occurs in >84% of autistics! Want to learn more? I would love more opportunities to get the word out!

Please see this entire post in my stories. Compliance based therapy is not child-led or about regulation because this type of therapy is about managing or extinguishing behaviors, which is a completely different manner of looking at and working with a child. This is a hill I will die on.

I don’t know this company/therapist but I do agree that this type of goal is compliance based and does not support a child.

Unpreferred tasks do not belong on IEPs.

Completing unpreferred tasks is not a learning goal, it’s a compliance expectation. Many IEP goals unintentionally focus on endurance, obedience, or suppression instead of learning.
