* WHAT...High surf expected. Water levels 3 to 5 feet above the
normal high tide line, peaking during each high tide.

* WHERE...Western Arctic Coast and Northwest Arctic Coast.

* WHEN...From 10 PM Wednesday to 4 AM AKDT Saturday.

* IMPACTS...Localized beach erosion may occur.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Southwest winds will steadily ramp up
Wednesday night into Thursday, remain strong through Friday,
then gradually weaken Friday night into Saturday. Winds will
peak Thursday and Friday, with gusts around 50 to 65 mph
expected. The strongest winds are expected near the Lisburne
Peninsula.

..ELEVATED WATER LEVELS LATE THURSDAY INTO FRIDAY AND SATURDAY...

* WHAT...A warm front associated with strong Bering Sea low will
move into Western Alaska Wednesday into Thursday, with
widespread rain and gusty winds expected. Water levels late
Thursday through Saturday morning could rise 2 to 4 feet above
the normal high tide line in the Norton Sound, and 1 to 2 feet
above the normal high tide line along the Yukon Delta Coast.

* WHERE...Southern Seward Peninsula Coast east of Nome, Eastern
Norton Sound, and Yukon Delta Coast.

* WHEN...Late Thursday September 3 through Saturday September 5.

* IMPACTS...Localized beach erosion may occur. Heavy rain and
gusty winds could make travel difficult at times.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Water levels are expected to peak late
Thursday into Friday and Saturday morning. Gusty east/southeast
winds Wednesday into Thursday will shift to the south/southwest
Thursday into Friday, leading to more onshore flow and the
potential for higher water levels. Strongest wind gusts across
the West Coast will peak on Thursday around 30 to 50 mph, with
around 0.50 to 1.25 inches of rain expected through Thursday
night. Winds will be lighter Friday and Saturday, but will
remain onshore. There remains some uncertainty with the exact
water level heights, which will continue to be monitored.

Good afternoon partners,

We’re tracking a Bering Sea low, set to impact the West Coast and Western Interior Sunday through Tuesday. Expect gusty winds and rain to build into the West Coast Sunday and Monday, shifting east into the Western Interior Monday and Tuesday with gusty winds developing in the Alaska Range passes. As of Friday afternoon, the highest rainfall totals will be in the Upper Kuskokwim near McGrath, with minor coastal impacts (primarily high surf) expected for the West Coast. We’ll keep you updated throughout the weekend as the forecast develops.

Operation TUNDRA MERLIN Activities Planned Near Nome
JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska — Residents of Nome may notice an increased military presence in the area as part of Operation TUNDRA MERLIN, an enduring Homeland Defense operation conducted by Alaskan Command’s U.S. and Canadian partners.
As part of this year’s operation, the U.S. Army will rapidly mobilize equipment and personnel in vicinity of Nome to demonstrate its ability to quickly position capabilities in remote Arctic environments.
Additionally, residents may observe low-flying military aircraft on Aug. 4 and Aug. 6 as aircrews conduct planned training missions in the vicinity of Nome. These flights are part of routine military movements and have been carefully coordinated to support operations.
Operation TUNDRA MERLIN is a long-planned, enduring operation that strengthens the combined joint force’s ability to defend North America and operate effectively in the Arctic. While some activities may be visible, all operations and activities have been planned to minimize impact to local communities

..Potential Bering Sea Low Late This Week...

We are monitoring the potential for a coastal storm around
Thursday of this week. There is high uncertainty with the track of
the storm as it could be anywhere from the Yukon Delta to Bering
Strait. Fortunately, it doesn`t appear to be a storm that would
come with major impacts. However, there is a chance for minor
coastal impacts and high surf due to gusty west-southwest winds.
We will continue to update as necessary throughout the week.

* IMPACTS...Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce
visibility.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The worst conditions are expected along
ridgetops and summits where the strongest winds are expected.
Conditions improve at lower elevations, especially for areas not
vulnerable to winds from the north.

Deadline for Halong survivors to apply for FEMA assistance moved to April 3

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline for former Typhoon Halong survivors to apply for state and federal individual assistance to April 3.

Eligible survivors can receive assistance with disaster-related needs, including subsistence equipment, home repairs, vehicle damage, medical expenses and reimbursement for temporary housing, according to FEMA. This is the second extension of the deadline, with the original deadline being Dec. 22, 2025, which was then moved to Feb. 20.

As of Feb. 20, FEMA says it has approved $36 million in federal individual assistance for 2,084 households so far. Survivors can apply for FEMA individual assistance by calling 1-866-342-1699 or going to DisasterAssistance.gov, or state individual assistance by calling 1-844-445-7131 or visiting Ready.Alaska.gov.
