5 Ways to Help Prevent Stroke - Small steps today can help protect your brain and heart tomorrow.

Could you lower your risk of a first stroke? Yes! Up to 80% of strokes may be preventable.

The latest American Stroke Association guidelines recommend:
1. Get checked regularly — monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and weight.
2. Build healthy habits — eat well, stay active, don’t smoke, and prioritize sleep.
3. Take medications as prescribed — when needed, they can help reduce stroke risk.
4. Use community resources — ask your healthcare provider about programs and support available to you.
5. Know your individual risks — including gender-specific and pregnancy-related risks.

Know the warning signs: F.A.S.T.
F — Face drooping
A — Arm weakness
S — Speech difficulty
T — Time to call 911

⏱ High blood pressure is known as the "silent killer"—it often has no symptoms but can lead to serious health issues like heart disease and stroke.

It is estimated that one in three U.S. adults have high blood pressure, or hypertension, defined as 130 (or higher) / 80 (or higher). Anything over 120 as the top number, regardless of the lower number, is considered elevated.

1. Eat a healthy diet, limiting salt.
2. Limit alcohol consumption.
3. Stay active.
4. Manage weight to prevent obesity.
5. Quit smoking or don’t smoke.
6. Manage stress.

Anxiety does not always present as emotional distress especially in men. In clinical practice, it manifests through cardiovascular symptoms.

Patients may report:
• Chest discomfort or pressure
• Palpitations
• Shortness of breath
• Dizziness or near-syncope

These symptoms can closely resemble acute cardiac events, including Myocardial infarction. However, in many cases, the underlying driver is autonomic nervous system activation associated with anxiety or panic.

Chronic anxiety is also linked to:
• Elevated cortisol and catecholamines
• Increased risk of Hypertension
• Progression of Coronary Artery Disease

Early recognition, proper cardiac evaluation, and integrated care (cardiology + mental health) are essential.

Your heart loves the outdoors. ❤️🌿
Spending time in nature isn't just refreshing, it's good for your heart. Whether it's a brisk walk in the park, a bike ride on a scenic trail, or simply enjoying fresh air, outdoor activity can help:

✅ Lower stress levels
✅ Reduce blood pressure
✅ Improve heart health
✅ Boost mood and energy
✅ Encourage regular physical activity

Chronic stress can take a toll on your cardiovascular health. Taking time to move your body in a natural setting is a simple, effective way to support both your mind and your heart.

This week, make time to step outside. Even 20–30 minutes of walking in nature can have meaningful health benefits. Your heart will thank you.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States and worldwide even as encouraging progress continues.

According to the American Heart Association's 2026 Statistical Update, the rate of heart disease-related deaths declined from 2022 to 2023. Yet cardiovascular disease still claims one life every 34 seconds.

The report also highlights a concerning trend: many cardiovascular risk factors continue to rise year after year, including:
• Obesity
• Physical inactivity
• Poor sleep health
• Uncontrolled blood pressure

One bright spot is the continued decline in cigarette smoking, demonstrating that sustained public health efforts can make a real difference.

These findings reinforce an important message: preventing cardiovascular disease requires more than treating illness, it demands a continued focus on healthy lifestyles, early detection, and addressing modifiable risk factors across our communities.

Every step toward better heart health matters.
